A suspect is in custody following a homicide in the 100 block of North Chestnut Street in Monrovia. WTHR identified the victim as 54-year-old Heather Barger and reported that the suspect was a 62-year-old man who was taken into custody without incident. Investigators say there is no ongoing danger to the public as the case moves forward. The Morgan County Major Crimes Team is actively working the scene.

A Quiet Street in a Fast-Growing Town
The homicide investigation is centered on North Chestnut Street in Monrovia, about a 35-minute drive southwest of downtown Indianapolis, according to WISH-TV.
Monrovia remains a small community, with nearly 2,500 residents, according to WISH-TV. A homicide can be especially jarring for longtime residents of a small town.
The homicide scene also sits just blocks from local public infrastructure. The Monroe-Gregg School District's central administrative offices are located at 135 South Chestnut Street, placing school system headquarters close to the 100 block where the investigation is centered, according to the Morgan County Correspondent.
Second Major Death Investigation in Six Months
This is not the first time Monrovia has drawn intense law enforcement attention this year. The homicide marks the second major death investigation in town in six months, following a March 13 murder-suicide on the 11000 block of Sashing Way, where a husband fatally shot his wife before taking his own life, per WIBC.
The multi-agency task force now investigating the North Chestnut Street homicide, known as the Morgan County Death Investigation Team or Major Crimes Team, was formed in 1995 to pool detectives and forensic resources from the Morgan County Sheriff's Office, Martinsville Police, Mooresville Police, Indiana State Police, and the Morgan County Prosecuting Attorney's Office. Official county records show the team has maintained a clearance rate of roughly 90 percent for homicides committed in the county since its creation, with every case brought to trial resulting in a conviction except for one acquittal.

What Charges Could Look Like
Under Indiana Code IC 35-42-1-1, murder is classified as a distinct felony carrying a statutory prison sentence of 45 to 65 years, with a 55-year advisory sentence, according to FindLaw. The offense can also qualify for life imprisonment without parole or the death penalty if aggravating circumstances are proven, and Indiana law does not allow murder sentences to be suspended below the statutory minimum.
For now, the priority remains identifying additional witnesses and building the case for the Morgan County Prosecuting Attorney's Office to review.
