A motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene Sunday afternoon after a crash on Indianapolis' southeast side, and the driver of the other vehicle involved stayed put and cooperated with officers as investigators worked to piece together what happened.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department received reports of a vehicle crash. Officers were dispatched around 2:15 p.m. Sunday and, upon arrival, found a wrecked vehicle and motorcycle, according to WTHR. Police located both vehicles involved in the crash and pronounced the motorcycle driver dead at the scene, per the Fox 59 report.
IMPD's fatal crash investigators were called to the location to determine what led to the collision. The other driver stayed at the scene and is cooperating with officers, the outlet notes. No additional information had been made available at the time of publication, including the identity of the deceased rider.
Open Questions Around the Crash
Investigators have not released details on exactly how the vehicles collided, whether speed or impairment played a role, or whether the motorcyclist was wearing a helmet. Under Indiana law, only riders under 18 or those operating with a learner's permit are required to wear a DOT-approved helmet and eye protection, according to FindLaw, meaning adult riders with full endorsements are legally exempt from that requirement.
State law also requires officers to offer a portable breath or chemical test within three hours to a person the officer has reason to believe operated a vehicle involved in a fatal or serious-injury crash, per FindLaw. The requirement does not by itself indicate suspicion of wrongdoing.
A Pattern of Fatal Crashes on Indy's South Side
Sunday's crash adds to a string of fatal motorcycle collisions IMPD has investigated across the city's south side this year. Earlier this month, on September 5, an unhelmeted rider died on East Hanna Avenue after striking a turning pickup truck while attempting to pass over a double yellow line, Hoodline previously reported. In June, a motorcyclist was killed in a crash on Sumner Street near Harding Street, also on the south side.
The southeast side corridor near South Arlington Avenue has seen fatal motorcycle crashes before. In a previous crash, a motorcyclist was killed in the 6500 block of Brookville Road near South Kitley Avenue, just east of South Arlington Avenue, after colliding with a small car, according to WTHR. In that case, a witness performed CPR before IMPD's fatal crash team arrived.
Marion County Leads State in Motorcycle Deaths
Marion County led Indiana in motorcycle collisions in 2024, with 334 crashes, and recorded the highest number of motorcycle fatalities in the state that year at 20 deaths, according to data reported by Wilson Kehoe Winingham Injury Lawyers. Statewide, Ride Safe Indiana and the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles recorded 2,850 motorcycle collisions and 136 motorcycle fatalities across Indiana in 2024, as Hoodline has reported.
The role of distracted driving in Indiana motorcycle crashes remains unclear. Civil claims stemming from Indiana motor vehicle crashes are also subject to modified comparative fault rules that bar recovery if an injured party or estate is found more than 50 percent at fault, per Pavlack Law. It remains unknown whether fault determinations, speed, or helmet use factored into Sunday's fatal crash on South Arlington Avenue.
