Nashville woke Thursday to clear skies and calm air in the mid-70s, but the relief will not last long. A dangerous heat surge is set to push the city to about 101 degrees, with the heat index potentially reaching 112.
Heat Peaks Thursday And Friday
The National Weather Service expects mostly sunny conditions through the afternoon, with only a slight chance of showers or thunderstorms after 5 p.m. South winds will stay light at around 0 to 5 mph, doing little to break the heat.
Friday will be nearly as hot, with a high near 100 and another slight chance of afternoon storms between 1 and 5 p.m. A Heat Advisory remains in effect across Nashville and much of Middle Tennessee through 8 p.m. Friday.
Ozone Alert Adds Another Outdoor Concern
Nashville also has an ozone air-quality alert in effect Thursday. Active children and adults, along with people who have asthma or other respiratory conditions, should limit prolonged outdoor exertion during the hottest afternoon hours.
The advisory recommends drinking plenty of fluids, staying in air conditioning when possible and taking frequent breaks in shaded or cooled areas. Anyone working or exercising outdoors should treat the combination of heat and humidity seriously, even if a brief shower pops up.
Weekend Heat Eases Only Slightly
The pattern continues from the heat stretch Hoodline previously reported, though temperatures finally begin to back off this weekend. Saturday should still reach 99 degrees under sunny skies, followed by 96 Sunday and 95 on Labor Day.
Cooler nights arrive first, with lows dropping from the mid-70s into the lower 70s by Sunday night. Even then, the forecast keeps Nashville in the mid-90s through at least Wednesday, with only small chances for pop-up storms.
