A 70-year-old Naperville man was found shot in the head, slumped over the steering wheel of his truck, in an alley in the 7000 block of South Calumet Avenue on Saturday morning. Chicago Police officers arrived around 10:15 a.m. after a homeowner called 911 to report that a vehicle parked in the alley was blocking their garage, only to discover the unresponsive man inside. The man was found unresponsive.
According to the Chicago Sun-Times, police recovered a single shell casing from a 9mm handgun on the passenger seat of the man's truck. Nearby video reviewed by investigators showed an unknown male exiting the victim's vehicle and walking away, though his identity has not been determined. A relative of the victim told police, per the report, that he had been in the area looking for homes to flip.
A Neighborhood With a Violent Recent History
The 7000 block of South Calumet Avenue sits within Greater Grand Crossing. Police have investigated other killings on South Calumet Avenue. In March, police launched a double-homicide investigation after two men, ages 37 and 44, were fatally shot in the 7800 block of South Calumet Avenue, south of Saturday's crime scene, per CBS Chicago.
Further north on the same street, Cook County authorities investigated the November 2025 killing of a 41-year-old woman in the 6800 block of South Calumet Avenue, a case that led to murder charges against a suspect arrested in Washington, Indiana, FOX 32 Chicago reported. Hoodline has separately covered that Calumet Avenue killing, part of a string of homicides in the neighborhood over the past year.
Area 1 detectives are now leading the inquiry into Saturday's shooting.
A Long Drive for a Fatal Errand
A relative of the victim told police he had been in the area scouting properties to flip.
Investigators have not said whether the victim was targeted for robbery or carjacking, nor how long his truck sat in the alley before the homeowner's call brought police to the scene. The identity of the man captured on video leaving the vehicle also remains unknown.
The shooting adds to a series of violent incidents in Greater Grand Crossing this year, including the beating and slashing death of a 59-year-old man in August.
