A pedestrian was struck and killed on northbound Interstate 880 in Oakland Friday night, and the California Highway Patrol is now investigating what led the person into the freeway's traffic lanes. The crash happened just before 8:15 p.m. near 29th Avenue, shutting down two lanes for more than an hour during rush-hour recovery traffic.
CHP Sgt. Andrew Barclay said the pedestrian was walking in lanes of traffic when the collision occurred, according to The Mercury News. The vehicle involved in the crash remained at the scene, Barclay said. Additional details about the incident, including the identities of the pedestrian and driver, were not immediately available Friday night.
Lanes Reopened Before 10 p.m.
The two right northbound lanes of I-880 were closed for the investigation until about 9:45 p.m., according to the same report from the Mercury News. That closure came during a stretch of freeway that has seen fatal pedestrian collisions before, though officers have not said whether Friday's crash shares any circumstances with those earlier cases.
Beyond the lane closures and Barclay's account of the pedestrian walking in traffic, no other details about how or why the person entered the roadway have been released. The driver's identity, the vehicle description and whether any impairment played a role were not disclosed.
A Stretch of Freeway With a History
Oakland's I-880 corridor has recorded other deadly pedestrian incidents over the years, underscoring the risks of the busy freeway. In one earlier case, a pedestrian walking on southbound Highway 880 just north of Hegenberger Road was struck and killed by a vehicle, according to CHP Officer Aaron Quistad, as reported by ABC7 News.
In another past Oakland case, a man was killed after being struck by one or more vehicles on I-880, and no vehicle stopped at the scene, ABC7 reported at the time; investigators shut down three southbound lanes until about 2 a.m. while they worked the scene. A separate fatal crash near the Seventh Street off-ramp saw CHP officers respond around 6:30 p.m. to a vehicle-versus-pedestrian collision on southbound I-880, according to KRON4. In that instance, investigators said a Toyota pickup traveling in the No. 1 lane struck a pedestrian who was standing in the lane, and the driver stopped immediately to help and cooperated with investigators. Those earlier cases are unrelated to Friday's crash and are cited here only for context on the corridor's history.
A Nationwide Safety Concern
Pedestrian deaths on freeways and other roadways remain a persistent problem nationally. In 2024, 7,080 pedestrians were killed and more than 71,000 were injured in traffic crashes across the country, with a pedestrian killed roughly every 74 minutes, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Friday's fatality on I-880 adds to that grim tally, though CHP has not yet released further findings from its investigation into what happened near 29th Avenue.
