Firefighters worked to free a person trapped inside a mangled car early Sunday after a crash on the Dan Ryan Expressway near the Interstate 94 off-ramp at 83rd Street on Chicago's South Side. The person was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, and the cause of the crash remains unclear.
According to ABC7 Chicago, Illinois State Police reported that the crash happened around midnight near South Chicago, injuring one person who was pulled from the wreckage by firefighters. A separate report from WGN-TV, published June 15, 2025, described a different crash: a car struck an Illinois Department of Transportation truck just before 2:30 a.m. on southbound I-94 at West 83rd Street. WGN reported that two occupants of the car were taken to an area hospital with injuries.
Lane Closures Followed a Separate 2025 Crash
WGN-TV's June 15, 2025, report said the left three lanes were closed for about four hours after that crash, with all lanes reopening just before 7 a.m. Illinois State Police told the outlet that the investigation into the 2025 crash was ongoing, and no cause had been determined.
A Rough Stretch for the Dan Ryan
The overnight crash adds to a string of recent incidents along the same corridor. A pedestrian was struck and killed in a hit-and-run on the Dan Ryan Expressway on Aug. 28, prompting an hours-long closure, and another pedestrian was struck and killed on the expressway in an incident reported Sept. 3, according to brief accounts from NBC Chicago and ABC7 Chicago, respectively. The stretch of highway near 83rd Street has also seen serious crashes in years past — on July 17, 2020, CBS News Chicago reported that a person was fatally struck by a hit-and-run driver after two vehicles crashed at that same intersection, part of a string of three crashes that morning that also left an infant seriously injured near 87th Street and killed another person in a car fire near 73rd Street.
The cause of Sunday's crash near 83rd Street remains unclear.
