Two neighboring Ravenswood craft breweries are throwing open their shared parking lot again this fall, and the beer this time comes with a bigger mission attached. Begyle Brewing and Dovetail Brewery will host the 11th annual Oktoberfestiversary on West Cuyler Avenue on October 10 and 11, with gate donations going straight to The Friendship Center, a Northwest Side food pantry that has fed neighbors since 1969.
The two-day street festival will pour more than 50 craft beers alongside 13 local live music acts and nine food vendors, including Soul & Smoke and Bad Johnny's Wood-Fired Pizza, according to Chicago Food Magazine. As WGN-TV reported, the festival is billed as a fall celebration of community, with food trucks, live music, and beer filling the lot between the two breweries, and Reilly Downes and the Acid Cowboys are set to play two performances during the weekend.
Organizers are aiming to push their combined fundraising total to 4.5 million meals donated across their events, per the same Chicago Food Magazine report. Begyle and Dovetail first teamed up with The Friendship Center in 2018 through their Mayfestiversary and Oktoberfestiversary festivals, and the partnership has since funded over 3 million meals prior to this year.
A Pantry Built for a Growing Need
The Friendship Center has served the community since 1969 and now operates out of 2711 W. Lawrence Ave., where it offers full-choice pantry shopping to nearly 6,000 neighbors each month. The organization expanded its services in June 2026 to include daily pet food distributions, according to The Friendship Center's own accounting of its history and programs.
That growth comes against a backdrop of worsening hunger citywide. A survey-based study from the Greater Chicago Food Depository and NORC at the University of Chicago found that 36% of Chicago households — roughly 417,000 households — and 47% of households with children experienced food insecurity as of June 2026. The same research shows food insecurity has climbed alongside rising grocery costs and rent.
Rates vary sharply by neighborhood. The 2026 Hunger in Chicago Report, cited by WTTW News, puts food insecurity at 20% on the North Side and 27% on the Northwest Side — the area The Friendship Center primarily serves, including neighborhoods like Albany Park and North Park — compared with more than 50% on the South Side.
Federal Cuts Push More Families to Local Pantries
Federal safety net changes enacted in July 2025 have added pressure on pantries like The Friendship Center. Cook County SNAP enrollment dropped 23% by June 2026, removing nearly 196,000 residents from federal food assistance programs, according to the Greater Chicago Food Depository's reporting on the shift, which has increased demand on community food pantries as federal work requirement updates reduced benefit eligibility.
