A woman fled out the back of her Seventh Ward home Sunday as several people who had entered the residence moved from room to room firing gunshots, according to New Orleans police. Officers responded to the 3000 block of North Miro Street after the woman ran out the back door, and detectives are now searching for the suspects involved in what NOPD is investigating as an aggravated burglary.
According to WDSU, the woman told police she was home when someone she knew came by the house shortly before the intrusion began. Several people then entered her home and fired shots throughout the residence, room by room, police said, prompting her to run out the back door to safety. It remains unclear from the police account whether the break-in stemmed from a targeted dispute connected to that visit or was an armed robbery attempt, and that question has not been resolved publicly.
Under Louisiana law, the alleged conduct described by police falls squarely within the state's definition of aggravated burglary. Louisiana Revised Statute § 14:60 defines the offense as unauthorized entry into an inhabited home with intent to commit a felony or theft while armed, arming oneself inside, or committing a battery — a charge carrying a mandatory sentence of 1 to 30 years at hard labor upon conviction, according to FindLaw. Separately, discharging a firearm inside an occupied dwelling where human life could be endangered can also trigger charges under Louisiana Revised Statute § 14:94 for illegal use of weapons, which carries a five-to-seven-year penalty.
NOPD Detectives Lead the Search
NOPD detectives are investigating the incident on the 3000 block of North Miro Street. The Fifth District operates out of a station on North Claiborne Avenue, reachable at (504) 658-6050 for non-emergency tips, per city records. NOPD detectives have handled other violent cases in the neighborhood recently — on August 8, they arrested 32-year-old Allen Harris on two counts of attempted murder after the second of two arson attacks that seriously burned two men on North Roman Street and Elysian Fields Avenue, an operation that also involved ATF agents, according to WWL-TV.
Sunday's home invasion is the latest in a string of violent incidents Hoodline has tracked in the Seventh Ward this year. Just two days earlier, a woman was shot before dawn in the same neighborhood, with a suspect later taken into custody near Claiborne Avenue. In July, a man was fatally shot at Rocheblave and Allen streets, and in June, another man was wounded in a shooting near A.P. Tureaud Avenue. The North Miro corridor itself has seen prior violence, including a March 2022 shooting at North Miro and Clouet streets in which a man suffered multiple gunshot wounds.
A Citywide Drop in Violence, But Local Anxiety Persists
The North Miro Street burglary comes even as broader crime data shows New Orleans trending safer overall. Metropolitan Crime Commission statistics through August 30 show major violent crimes across Orleans Parish — including homicides, nonfatal shootings, carjackings and armed robberies — have fallen 18 percent year-to-date compared to 2025. Still, gunfire remains a persistent feature of life in pockets of the Seventh Ward.
