Cincinnati police officers swarmed the 100 block of East Shields Street on Tuesday afternoon after a shooting broke out just steps from the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. Investigators had not released a suspect description or said how many people were injured as of Tuesday evening, and officers were expected to remain in the area investigating into the night.
Campus Alert Went Out As Police Responded
According to WLWT, UC Public Safety issued a campus alert around 5:15 p.m. after officers responded to the 100 block of East Shields Street, and the university later confirmed there was no continuing threat to campus. Cincinnati police continued investigating the shooting Tuesday afternoon into the evening, but as of the station's report, they had not disclosed what led to the gunfire or released any information about a suspect. The station's account also notes officers had not said how many people were hurt.
East Shields Street forms the northern edge of the UC medical campus superblock, running alongside the College of Medicine and university health facilities, per University of Cincinnati background on the area. The street serves as an access route for medical complex parking and buildings, putting Tuesday's shooting within a stretch that mixes medical facilities, apartment buildings and short-term rentals. UC Medical Center itself operates the region's only adult Level I Trauma Center, a 724-bed hospital that treats more than 75,000 adult emergency patients a year, according to UC Health.
Same Block Saw Gunfire In July
This is not the first time this stretch of East Shields Street has drawn a heavy police response. In July, officers responded to a shooting across from the Veterans Affairs Medical Center on the same street, where dozens of shots were fired during a party at a short-term rental, as reported by WKRC. Tuesday's incident also comes just over a week after back-to-back shootings near campus in late August, including gunfire outside a Shake Shack and near Calhoun and Jefferson streets, which had already pushed university police to increase visible patrols in Clifton and Corryville as students returned for fall classes.
University of Cincinnati police coordinate daily operations and joint patrols with the Cincinnati Police Department across Clifton Heights, Corryville and Avondale, covering the commercial and residential corridors that ring campus. The 100 block of East Shields Street falls under Cincinnati Police District 4, which covers six central neighborhoods and deploys dedicated violent crime squads to address hot spots, according to Guardian Protection. UC Public Safety, which achieved state law enforcement agency accreditation in August, relies on its Rave Alert text and email system along with the Bearcat Guardian app to push out rapid updates during active investigations like this one.
Part Of A Rough Summer For Avondale
Tuesday's shooting adds to a string of violent incidents that have rattled Avondale and the neighborhoods surrounding UC this summer. An early-morning Avondale shooting sent one person to UC Medical Center in July, while an August 11 daytime shooting near the Cincinnati Zoo injured two people, and an August 16 shooting on Rion Lane injured four. Just over a week before Tuesday's incident, a man was shot near a UC-area fast-food strip, part of what Hoodline has tracked as a piling-up of violence in Clifton Heights.
Despite these localized clusters, citywide shooting totals in Cincinnati have trended downward in recent years, dropping 20% in 2025 to 283 victims, down from 353 in 2024 and 377 in 2023, according to data reported by WKRC. Preliminary July figures showed violent crime tracking 21% below national baselines even as pockets of gun violence persist around campus and medical corridors. Police have not said what led to Tuesday's shooting, and the questions of a suspect description and the condition of any victims remained unanswered as investigators worked the scene into the evening.
