
Miami is starting Wednesday, September 16, clear and around 81 degrees, but the quiet opening will give way to a hotter, stormier day. The high should reach the upper 80s as showers and thunderstorms become more likely later in the day.
Storm Chances Build Through The Afternoon
The forecast calls for a 50% chance of showers and thunderstorms Wednesday, with showers and thunderstorms becoming more likely from late morning into the afternoon. Northeast to east-northeast winds will run 10 to 15 mph, with gusts up to 20 mph, and stronger storms could bring frequent lightning, heavy rain and sudden wind gusts.
The latest update is more unsettled than the earlier weekend-focused outlook. The National Weather Service in Miami says an upper-level disturbance moving toward South Florida will help increase shower and thunderstorm coverage through Thursday and into the weekend.
Wet Pattern Takes Over Late Week
Thursday will look similar temperature-wise, with a high near 88 and a 70% chance of showers and thunderstorms. Rain chances rise to above 80% Friday, above 80% Saturday and about 80% Sunday and Monday, keeping outdoor plans on a short leash across Miami and the rest of South Florida.
The heaviest storms could produce brief urban flooding, especially in low-lying areas and locations with poor drainage. Slow-moving or repeated storms may also drop several rounds of rain in the same neighborhood, while the main immediate hazards remain lightning, downpours and gusty winds.
Beach And Boating Conditions Turn Rougher
Wednesday's stronger northeast winds will also make the coast less cooperative. Atlantic and Gulf seas may become rougher by late Wednesday, while Small Craft Advisories are scheduled for portions of the local waters from Wednesday evening into early Thursday.
Onshore winds and building swell will raise the risk of rip currents along South Florida beaches through the end of the week. Anyone heading outside should move indoors when thunder is heard, avoid driving through flooded streets and check marine conditions before heading out on the water.
