A dark-colored SUV came speeding through downtown Chicago early Monday and slammed into two pedestrians crossing the street, then kept going without stopping. A 22-year-old woman suffered multiple injuries and a man broke his leg in the crash, and both were rushed to the hospital while the driver disappeared into the night.
Crash Happened at Busy Downtown Intersection
The collision unfolded at 1:55 a.m. as the two pedestrians were crossing Ida B. Wells Drive at Clark Street, according to CBS News Chicago. Police told the station the SUV was travelling at a high speed when it struck the pair. The woman and man were both taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where they were listed in good condition, according to a separate CBS News Chicago report.
Rather than stopping to check on the victims, the driver kept going east on Ida B. Wells Drive, according to the same report. As of early Monday, no one was in custody, and the police Major Accident Investigation Unit had taken over the case, the outlet noted.
A Separate July 2026 Hit-and-Run
The Ida B. Wells Drive crash is not the only hit-and-run involving a Chicago pedestrian. In July 2026, a man was seriously hurt in a separate hit-and-run on DuSable Lake Shore Drive downtown, struck at about 11:40 p.m. in the 100-block of South DuSable Lake Shore Drive, according to ABC7 Chicago. Police told the station a black vehicle blew through a traffic light and lane markings before hitting the man, who was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious condition.
On the city's West Side, police are still asking the public for help identifying a driver who struck and seriously injured a 45-year-old woman in East Garfield Park, per FOX 32 Chicago. That crash happened around 7:54 p.m. Monday in the 3100 block of West Franklin Boulevard at Kedzie Avenue, where officers said the woman was walking in a crosswalk when a maroon 2013-2018 Ford Fusion hit her before fleeing eastbound toward Sacramento Boulevard. She suffered head injuries and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition, according to the station.
Police said no one was in custody early Monday. The SUV was described as dark-colored. The Major Accident Investigation Unit's inquiry into the Ida B. Wells Drive crash remains active.
