Two gunmen forced their way into a home in West Pullman early Monday and opened fire, shooting a 20-year-old man multiple times before fleeing on foot, according to Chicago police. The victim was rushed to a hospital in critical condition as investigators worked to identify the attackers.
The shooting happened around 2:40 a.m. on the 11800 block of South Princeton Avenue, according to Chicago Sun-Times. Police say the two armed men entered the residence and began shooting, striking the young man multiple times in the body before running off. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, a Level I Trauma Center that ranks among the four busiest emergency trauma facilities in Illinois, per UChicago Medicine, and remained in critical condition as of the report.
Area 2 Detectives were investigating the case. CPD restored Area 2 as a standalone detective bureau in 2020 to centralize investigations for neighborhoods like West Pullman, according to a study cited by CWB Chicago. The unit shares headquarters with the 5th District station in Pullman, and no arrests had been reported as detectives continued searching for the two gunmen.
A Neighborhood Already on Edge
The block has seen serious gun violence before. In June 2013, suspects exchanged gunfire with responding Chicago police officers during a shootout on the same stretch of South Princeton Avenue before one suspect was taken into custody, per CBS News.
Monday's home invasion also lands in the middle of a rough stretch for West Pullman. Hoodline reported a man was found fatally shot on West 117th Street on September 21. In August, a 16-year-old was shot on South Normal Avenue, and a 43-year-old man died after an overnight shooting in the neighborhood in July.
Part of a Citywide Uptick
The West Pullman violence has unfolded against a broader citywide trend. Chicago recorded 210 homicides through June 2026, a nearly 6% increase over the same period in 2025, breaking a streak of four consecutive years of annual homicide declines, Hoodline has reported. West Pullman itself is a community of roughly 24,500 residents, 88.6% of whom identify as Black, with a median household income of $33,898, according to Wikipedia.
The 11800 block sits within the Chicago Police Department's 5th District, known as Calumet, which covers Far South Side communities including West Pullman, Roseland, Pullman, and Riverdale. The district led all 22 Chicago police districts in initiated investigatory stops in 2025, logging 7,595 such incidents, according to the department's 2025 Annual Report.
Steep Penalties Await if Suspects Are Caught
If identified and convicted, the two gunmen would face some of the most serious charges available under Illinois law. Forcing entry into an occupied home while armed and using or threatening force qualifies as home invasion, a Class X felony. One firearm-related subsection adds 15 years and another adds 20 years, according to Combs Waterkotte.
Police have not said whether the gunmen knew the victim or whether anything was taken from the home. As of Monday, no suspect descriptions or arrests had been announced, and the investigation by Area 2 Detectives remained active.
