Chicago Police are searching for a man accused of sexually abusing a 48-year-old woman aboard a CTA bus in University Village earlier this month, releasing surveillance images this week in hopes that someone recognizes him. Investigators say the man inappropriately touched the woman just before 5:30 p.m. on September 3 in the 1100 block of West Roosevelt Road.
According to ABC7 Chicago, police say the man wore dark clothing and had a beard at the time of the incident. Officers have not released his name, and authorities did not provide additional information beyond the surveillance images and a brief description. CTA Route 12 is listed among the bus connections at Roosevelt station, according to the Regional Transportation Authority.
How Investigators Are Using CTA Camera Footage
Public Transportation Detectives are asking anyone with information to call 312-745-4447 or submit an anonymous tip at CPDtip.com referencing RD number JK399008, per the same ABC7 account.
CTA operates more than 32,000 cameras systemwide, according to Mass Transit, which reports HD upgrades to particular rail cameras. CTA camera images have helped police investigate crimes and make arrests, the publication reported. That network reportedly aids in roughly 200 arrests annually across the system.
A Pattern of Alerts Along the Roosevelt Corridor
This is not the first sexual abuse case tied to CTA service on Roosevelt Road. In May, Chicago Police arrested and charged a 36-year-old man with two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse and unlawful restraint after he abused a woman on a bus in the 1700 block of West Roosevelt Road, according to FOX 32 Chicago. Months later, Hoodline covered a Blue Line groping case near Irving Park, where CPD released surveillance photos of a man accused of sexually abusing a passenger on September 10.
Safety Statistics Collide With Ongoing Alerts
The University Village incident comes even as citywide transit crime statistics have trended downward. CPD figures reported in mid-2026 showed violent crime across the CTA system fell 20% year-to-date compared with 2025, per WTTW News.
Still, public alerts about groping and abuse on buses and trains have continued to surface regularly even as overall violent incidents decline.
Roosevelt Road itself has seen other high-profile safety incidents this year. In August, a 23-year-old was shot in the chest and legs along Roosevelt Road, with the gunman still at large. For now, the man accused of abusing the 48-year-old bus rider remains unidentified, and police are relying on the public to help put a name to the face in the surveillance images.
