Utah football fans will soon be able to watch games from leather chairs practically close enough to hear the huddle, as the University of Utah has unveiled a new open-air, field-level seating area in the north end zone of Rice-Eccles Stadium. The 42-seat section, called the ALKEME Field Boxes, is scheduled to soft-launch at Utah's game against Houston on Oct. 24, offering a courtside-basketball-style vantage point with suite-like amenities attached.
According to KSL.com, the boxes are split into four-seat sections along with one six-seat box positioned along the north end zone wall. Each seat comes with in-seat service, all-inclusive food and drinks, and an individual TV screen showing live game feed, replays and stats. The stadium's report notes the new section does not impede fans already seated in the north end zone, meaning the upgrade slots in without displacing existing ticket holders.
A Big Ask, But No Alcohol
University of Utah athletic director Mark Harlan said fans have shown significant demand for new and immersive ways to experience games at Rice-Eccles Stadium, per the same account. Joel Adams, another university official, said the on-field seats address a need to elevate the fan experience at the venue. But for all the premium touches, one perk remains off the table: alcohol.
The field boxes do not include alcohol service, even as the University of Utah has rolled out an alcohol upgrade option for some south end zone seats. No other alcohol sales are currently permitted at Utah football games. That split reflects broader University of Utah Event Services policy, which keeps Rice-Eccles Stadium a largely dry venue and confines alcohol availability to specific, university-designated zones under state liquor rules.
Access, Parking and a Waitlist
Buyers of the field boxes get parking in the west lot next to the seats, along with a private entryway and use of the northwest tunnel to reach their spots, the outlet's report notes. The boxes will be available for purchase on a selective basis for the BYU game on November 7 and the West Virginia game on November 27. Champions Alliance members and Scholarship Circle members get first priority to purchase available boxes, while other fans can join a waitlist with a $500 deposit.
ALKEME's Two-Front Sponsorship Play
The section's name comes from ALKEME Insurance, which sponsors the new field boxes and separately struck a deal with the university to become its helmet equipment sponsor — the company's name now appears on the rear bumper of every Utah football helmet. ALKEME, founded in 2020 by CEO Curtis Barton and based in Ladera Ranch, California, has completed more than 95 agency acquisitions and operates over 100 locations across 35 states as of August, according to PR Newswire. The firm is backed by private equity group GCP Capital Partners and ranks among the top 16 U.S. insurance brokerages. Barton said Utah Athletics consistently sets the pace for what's next in college athletics.
The helmet deal is possible because the NCAA Division I Cabinet approved a policy in January allowing college teams to wear up to two commercial sponsor logos on uniforms and one on equipment during regular-season play, effective August 1, according to CBS Sports. The rule change was designed to open new revenue streams for athletic departments following college athlete revenue-sharing agreements.
Following a National Premium-Seating Trend
Utah's move mirrors a broader push among major programs to monetize field-level real estate. Ohio State introduced nine elevated field-level suites in Ohio Stadium this season priced at $142,700 per suite, a comparison highlighted by On3 as part of a nationwide trend toward high-yielding premium fan experiences. The new inventory at Rice-Eccles arrives on top of the $80 million Ken Garff Red Zone expansion the University of Utah completed in August 2021, which enclosed the south end zone with luxury suites, loge boxes and a field-level club patio, according to University of Utah Athletics.
Demand for close-up sightlines at Rice-Eccles is hardly new. The University of Utah reached 98 consecutive sellouts as of September 20, a streak dating back to the 2010 season opener aside from the pandemic-canceled 2020 season, per University of Utah Athletics figures.
The rollout also lands amid a coaching transition for the program. Longtime head coach Kyle Whittingham closed out his tenure with a win in the 2025 Las Vegas Bowl before Morgan Scalley took over as head coach for the 2026 season, a shift Hoodline previously reported alongside the program's broader facilities push. Rice-Eccles Stadium, located in Salt Lake City, continues to expand its footprint beyond football as well, with the venue set to host the 2027 Discover NHL Winter Classic between the Utah Mammoth and Colorado Avalanche on December 31.
