A 23-year-old Woodstock man is dead after his pickup truck failed to negotiate a curve on Butternut Drive in unincorporated Dorr Township early Sunday morning, crossed the roadway and slammed into several trees. The crash happened near the intersection of Butternut Drive and Chestnut Drive, just outside Crystal Lake, at around 2:19 a.m.
The vehicle, a 2024 Toyota Tacoma, was traveling westbound when it left the roadway near the curve and crossed to the south side before striking multiple trees, according to the Daily Herald. Firefighters from the Crystal Lake Fire Protection District were dispatched to the 9400 block of Butternut Drive for a reported crash with entrapment, and found heavy vehicle damage when they arrived, per Shaw Local. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, according to authorities cited by NBC 5 Chicago.
The Daily Herald reports that the young man's identity has not been publicly released. The McHenry County Sheriff's Office confirmed deputies were called to the scene, and police said speed, weather conditions, and alcohol may all have been contributing factors in the crash. The investigation remains underway.

Under Illinois law, a driver can be charged with driving under the influence based on a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08 percent or higher, or based on an officer's observations that impairment left a driver unable to safely operate a vehicle, according to the Illinois General Assembly. The investigation remains underway.
