A 29-year-old man died Friday night after two vehicles struck him while he was walking along Sugar Grove Parkway, according to police. Sugar Grove officers responded to the intersection of Sugar Grove Parkway and Cross Street, where first responders tried to save the man before he was pronounced dead at the scene.
As reported by ABC7 Chicago, police said it was not immediately clear what led up to the two collisions, and the man's identity had not been released at the time of that report. The road was closed for nearly four hours while investigators worked the scene before reopening to traffic.
Sugar Grove police are continuing to investigate the man's death and are asking anyone with information to call 630-391-7250.
A Corridor Already Marked for Safety Upgrades
The crash happened at an intersection that is already on the state's radar for an overhaul. The Illinois Department of Transportation has allocated $96.8 million in its multi-year improvement program for major reconstruction and lane expansion along Route 47, also known as Sugar Grove Parkway, from Cross Street to Galena Road, according to the agency's June 2024 plan. The project is intended to add lanes and new pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure along Route 47.
This is not the first fatal crash to hit this corridor. An 18-year-old driver died in May 2024 when their vehicle collided with a commercial semi-truck near the entrance to Waubonsee Community College along the same parkway, per a report from FOX 32 Chicago at the time. Route 47 has also had construction work planned, including a full northbound closure scheduled for September 3 for repairs to the bridge carrying U.S. Route 30 overhead, according to Shaw Local.
Pedestrian Deaths Climbing Even as Overall Crashes Decline
Friday's crash adds to a troubling statewide pattern. Pedestrian fatalities in Illinois rose from 195 in 2022 to 218 in 2025, even as total traffic deaths across the state steadily dropped, according to Illinois Department of Transportation data reported by the Daily Herald. Pedestrian deaths have continued climbing against that broader downward trend.
Illinois Law on Pedestrian Safety
Under Illinois law, drivers must stop and yield to pedestrians crossing in a crosswalk when traffic signals are absent or inactive, per state statute 625 ILCS 5/11-1002.
Friday's crash echoes an earlier Sugar Grove case: a local resident pleaded guilty to fleeing the scene of a fatal hit-and-run after striking a pedestrian in Sugar Grove in October 2024. It remains unknown whether the man was crossing within a marked crosswalk, what role lighting or vehicle speeds may have played, or whether criminal charges will result once Sugar Grove police complete their investigation into Friday's collision.
