A 23-year-old Addison man is facing multiple felony gun charges after prosecutors say he fired three or four shots at an occupied vehicle carrying two juveniles following a confrontation in a west suburban parking lot. Edwin Orozco remains jailed without bail as the case moves through DuPage County court, accused of aggravated discharge of a firearm, unlawful possession of a weapon by a street gang member, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, and mob action.
According to FOX 32 Chicago, the confrontation began when a driver carrying two juveniles confronted a man who was allegedly throwing gang signs at him. The driver then went to a business in the 300 block of West Lake Street to wait for his wife and daughter, prosecutors allege, where three people approached his vehicle. One of them reportedly asked, “Which you is?” and then said, “Count love.”
Shots Fired as Victim Tried to Drive Away
Prosecutors say one of the three people struck the vehicle's rear passenger window, and another kicked the rear bumper as the driver tried to pull away. As the car fled, the victim told investigators he heard three or four shots, and the vehicle was struck, according to prosecutors cited by FOX 32 Chicago. The shooting was first reported to emergency dispatchers around 5 p.m. on October 4 near Lake Street and Neva Avenue, as reported by Elmhurst Patch.
The victims later met police in the 500 block of West Stevens Drive, where officers found a bullet hole in the vehicle's driver-side rear fender and another in the lower center of the trunk, per prosecutors. The same account notes that investigators recovered four 9mm shell casings at the scene. Orozco and two others allegedly fled north on Neva Avenue in a red sedan.
Search Warrant Led Police to a Matching Gun Box
Addison police detectives identified Orozco as the alleged shooter and executed a search warrant on October 16 at his home in the 1500 block of West Byron Avenue, according to Shaw Local. There, detectives found a gun box for a 9mm Ruger pistol. Prosecutors say Orozco purchased a Ruger RXM 9mm pistol in November 2025. He was taken into custody after investigators identified him as the alleged shooter.
Orozco first appeared in court on a Saturday, where a judge ordered him held in custody as the case proceeded. His case was then reassigned to a different judge, who on Monday ordered him held in pretrial detention. The outcome reflects Illinois' Pretrial Fairness Act, which eliminated cash bail statewide in 2023 and requires prosecutors to prove a specific public safety threat before a judge can order a defendant detained ahead of trial.
Prosecutors Cite Mandatory Prison Terms
DuPage County State's Attorney Bob Berlin said the shooting put occupants, nearby motorists and pedestrians at risk, though no passengers, bystanders or motorists were injured as a result of Orozco's alleged actions. “This type of violent and dangerous behavior will not be tolerated in DuPage County and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” Berlin said, also commending the Addison Police Department for identifying Orozco as the alleged shooter. Berlin has led the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office since 2010 and has frequently pushed for pretrial detention in violent cases, a pattern also visible in a Bensenville gas station heist case his office pursued earlier this year.
Under Illinois statute, unlawful possession of a firearm by a street gang member carries a mandatory, non-probationable prison term of three to 10 years when the weapon is loaded. Discharging a firearm at an occupied vehicle is a separate Class 1 felony punishable by four to 15 years in prison and fines of up to $25,000, with the charge elevating to a Class X felony if committed within 1,000 feet of a school.
Police Chief Condemns ‘Gang Violence’
Addison Police Chief Roy Selvik called the incident gang violence, saying that “This type of gang violence and the complete disregard for human life is frightening and has no place in society.” He added that police will use every investigative tool available to ensure perpetrators of violent acts are removed from the streets.
The shooting follows a separate January shooting on Lake Street that left one person wounded. Hoodline reported in January on a separate shooting that left one person wounded on the same thoroughfare. Orozco is due back in court on November 9 for arraignment.
