A 31-year-old Anderson woman is facing a stack of felony charges after police say she crashed her SUV into a truck near 23rd and Central while drunk, leaving a juvenile with a broken arm and one of her own children with a broken rib, then ran from the scene on foot. Mia Winkel was arrested on October 3 and remains tied to a case that has only grown more serious as court documents have come out.
Officers were called to the crash just before 11:30 a.m. that Saturday, according to Fox 59. When they arrived, they found a black SUV on its side, resting against a power pole, but the driver was nowhere to be found. The SUV had overturned against the pole.
Police eventually identified Winkel as the suspect and tracked her down at a home in the 2200 block of Main Street. Per the same account, she was described in court documents as able to stand without assistance but extremely upset while detained, and she reportedly admitted multiple times that the crash was her fault while repeatedly asking officers whether anyone had died.
Blood Alcohol Reading and Medical Evaluation
A portable breath test indicated Winkel's blood alcohol concentration was 0.221, according to the report, and she was taken to St. Vincent Hospital for a medical evaluation, where a blood draw was also collected. Despite her alleged admissions at the scene, Winkel also reportedly told police she did not remember the crash or driving the vehicle.
No one was killed in the accident, but both a juvenile in the other vehicle and one of Winkel's own children in the SUV were hurt. The juvenile suffered a broken arm, while Winkel's child suffered a broken rib, the station reports.
Felony Charges Filed in Madison Circuit Court
Winkel was charged in Madison Circuit Court 4 with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in serious bodily injury, a Level 3 felony under Indiana's Indiana Administrative Rules-cited hit-and-run statute, IC 9-26-1-1.1. She also faces two counts of causing serious bodily injury when operating while intoxicated, a Level 5 felony referencing IC 9-30-5-4, along with three counts of neglect of a dependent resulting in bodily injury, also a Level 5 felony.
She is being held on a 50,000 dollar bond. An initial hearing in her case was held last Thursday, October 8, and as of October 12 online court records did not show another hearing scheduled.
Cases involving alleged drunk driving and fleeing the scene aren't unique to Madison County. In LaPorte County, police arrested a 41-year-old Michigan City woman at her home shortly after midnight on similar allegations that she struck a vehicle and fled, according to nwitimes.com.
