A cult cocktail brand born behind an unmarked oak door on a narrow Chinatown street in 2008 is finally coming to Miami Beach. Apotheke South Beach opens October 16 behind its own unmarked entrance on Washington Avenue at Moxy South Beach, marking the botanical mixology concept's fourth location nationwide and its first expansion into Florida.

The new lounge joins existing Apotheke outposts in New York City's Chinatown, Los Angeles, and New York's NoMad district, according to PR Newswire, which detailed the brand's deliberate, non-franchise approach to expansion. As reported by Foodservice News, the South Beach debut marks the first time Apotheke has brought its original cocktail formulas to Florida.

A Design Legacy Carried Forward

Apotheke's visual identity traces back to co-founder and original designer Christopher Tierney, who created the signature aesthetic of the original Chinatown speakeasy. Tierney passed away in April 2021 before completing the brand's NoMad location, leaving his sister and co-founder Heather Tierney alongside longtime brand partners to carry his design language into later venues, including South Beach, per 6sqft. The seed story notes that Apotheke South Beach's design is inspired by Christopher Tierney's original work.

The brand's pedigree runs deep: Apotheke Chinatown was recognized by Architectural Digest as one of the best speakeasies in America, while Time Out Los Angeles named Apotheke Los Angeles the most stylish bar in that city. The Los Angeles location also received the German Design Award for Best Interior Architecture, and Apotheke NoMad was named the Americas winner for Club & Bar Design in 2023, according to SBID.

Nine New Formulas Made for Washington Avenue

Rather than organizing drinks by spirit, Apotheke sorts its menu by intended effect, with categories like Stimulants, Painkillers, Aphrodisiacs, Euphoric Enhancers, and Health & Beauty, a concept rooted in old-world apothecary traditions, as explained by Chase.com. Apotheke South Beach's own formula list was curated by Nicolas O'Connor, who said the brand builds its drinks in collaboration with plants.

O'Connor crafted nine all-new original formulas exclusively for the Washington Avenue location, including Novia del Sol, Write It Off, Dry Until Vitae, Dawn Patrol, Bait & Switch, Bilongo, Will-o'-the-Wisp, Ears to You, and Collins Cure. Novia del Sol is made with vodka infused with calendula, coconut and California orange cordial, tamarind, turmeric, Meyer lemon and club soda, while Write It Off blends bourbon, Amaro Montenegro, date nectar, tamarind, matcha bitters and candied almond. Dawn Patrol combines dark-aged rum with ube, dark roast coffee, condensed coconut milk, cardamom, burnt cinnamon and mint, and Bilongo pairs dark-aged rum with açai, pistachio cream, lime, goji berry, perilla, maca root, sea salt and Dubai chocolate bitters. The new formulas will be complemented by rotating historic drinks pulled from Apotheke's New York and Los Angeles menus.

Walking In Through an Unmarked Door

Guests access Apotheke South Beach from the street through an unmarked door on Washington Avenue rather than through the hotel lobby, echoing the brand's original 2008 Chinatown entrance behind an unmarked oak door on Doyers Street. The lounge will open daily from 6:30 p.m. until late, welcoming walk-ins as capacity allows, with reservation details to be announced. Expect live music and DJ sets alongside a cocktail experience built around conversation, discovery and human connection.

Apotheke's food program has evolved differently across its locations. The original 2008 Chinatown bar and the 2018 Los Angeles location, which opened inside a repurposed warehouse near the Los Angeles River, operated purely as drink-focused lounges, while the brand's 2022 NoMad opening introduced its first-ever shareable-plates food program, according to Time Out.

Joining a Crowded Washington Avenue Food Hall

Apotheke South Beach slots into an already stacked food and beverage lineup at Moxy South Beach, which also includes Chef Eyal Shani's Israeli restaurant Naked Tomato, rooftop venue Serena serving Latin fusion specialties, seafood spot Como Como, and mezcal lounge Mezcalista. Hoodline previously covered the opening of Naked Tomato's Moxy debut in May, part of the hotel's strategy of stacking distinct, street-accessible venue concepts to capture both tourist and local spending.

Moxy South Beach opened in February 2021 as developer Lightstone Group's first resort-style hotel concept, with 202 rooms across seven stories at 915 Washington Avenue, according to The Real Deal. Miami architect Kobi Karp designed the building to preserve the site's historic 1930s Art Deco storefront facades on the ground floor while constructing a new hotel tower above, a nod to South Beach's preservation mandates for the Art Deco District.

A Corridor in Flux

The opening lands amid a broader push to revive Washington Avenue. In February, the Miami Beach City Commission unanimously passed a deregulatory ordinance easing approval processes for new restaurants and indoor entertainment concepts along the corridor between 5th Street and Lincoln Road, a measure the City of Miami Beach says was designed to reduce commercial vacancies in South Beach. City officials have also debated the Washington Avenue Residential Plan, a zoning proposal that would raise height limits to 150 feet and increase floor-area ratios to spur mixed-use redevelopment between 5th and 17th Streets, according to the Miami Beach Journal.

Not every bet on the corridor has paid off. Hoodline has reported on hospitality turnover nearby, including two Washington Avenue restaurants going dark with no reopening date, and a $149 million foreclosure fight at the nearby Goodtime Hotel. Whether a capacity-controlled speakeasy concept like Apotheke can thrive inside a high-volume lifestyle hotel during South Beach's peak tourism cycles remains an open question for the corridor's continued revival.
