A 45-year-old Atlanta man is dead after a fight that began inside a downtown Nashville bar and turned fatal on the street outside it early Sunday morning. Torey Ward was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he died, after police said he was placed in a chokehold during a physical altercation with another man on 2nd Avenue North.
A Bathroom Encounter Spirals Into Violence
According to WSMV, the trouble started after Ward's girlfriend had an encounter with 37-year-old Keith King Jr., a Nashville resident, while Ward was in the bathroom. When Ward came out, a verbal altercation broke out between the two men, and bar staff asked the entire group to leave.
The dispute didn't end there. Once everyone was outside the bar, the station's report says a physical fight erupted between Ward and King. Witnesses told police that King punched Ward and then put him in a chokehold. King told investigators he acted out of fear for his own safety, per the same account.
Girlfriend Says She Tried to Step In
Ward's girlfriend gave police her own account of how the night unfolded. She said she tried to intervene in the fight after watching King punch Ward in the chest several times while they were still inside the bar, and she told officers she was injured by an unidentified woman who was part of King's group of friends.
No charges have been filed against King at this time, the article notes, and the medical examiner is still working to determine Ward's cause of death. Metro Nashville Police said they will share their findings with the district attorney's office once the investigation is complete.
Not the First Deadly Bar Confrontation Downtown
Nashville's entertainment district has seen violent confrontations outside its bars before. In 2021, Metro Police said Dallas “DJ” Barrett died after being restrained by security guards at Dierks Bentley's Whiskey Row on Lower Broadway, with the medical examiner determining, as reported by Fox 17, that he died from asphyxiation. Seven people were ultimately charged with reckless homicide in that case, and six former security guards are still awaiting trial after a judge pushed the proceeding from December to a tentative July 2027 date.
Earlier this month, downtown Nashville saw another bar-area fight make headlines when former Vanderbilt wide receiver Kayleb Barnett was accused of aggravated assault near a Second Avenue South venue following the Commodores' loss to Ole Miss. WKRN reported that authorities determined Barnett was the predominant aggressor and that he was held on a $5,000 bond ahead of a Nov. 13 court date. Ward's death now adds a far more serious outcome to a stretch of downtown that has repeatedly made news for violence spilling out of its bars and onto the sidewalk.
