A Beach Park man accused of threatening to kill his girlfriend and her family before fleeing deputies with a loaded handgun was arrested at his home this past Wednesday, eight months and five days after the confrontation began. Ricardo Perez, 35, now faces five felony charges tied to the February incident, which investigators say they cracked open using a cellphone he left behind while running from police.
A Suspicious Call Near Beach Road and Loyola Avenue
The case dates back to February 16, 2026, when Lake County Sheriff's deputies responded to a report of a suspicious person yelling into a cellphone in the roadway near Beach Road and Loyola Avenue in Beach Park, according to Country Herald. Perez allegedly ran on foot when deputies arrived on scene. As he fled, authorities say he threw a loaded Smith & Wesson SD9 9mm handgun into the yard of a nearby residence, according to the Lake and McHenry County Scanner. The gun reportedly had a round already in the chamber with additional rounds loaded in the magazine.
Deputies and a K9 unit searched the surrounding area but could not locate Perez that day, per the same account. He did, however, leave something behind: a cellphone he apparently lost in the chaos of fleeing. It would turn out to be the break that eventually tied him to the scene.
Threats Allegedly Made With a Child in the Home
According to the Lake and McHenry County Scanner, Perez is accused of threatening to kill and shoot his girlfriend and her family while a 9-year-old child was inside her home at the time. The outlet reports those threats are part of what led to the charges now filed against him.
Cyber Lab Work and Fingerprints Close the Gap
Sheriff's detectives obtained a search warrant for the recovered cellphone and worked with the Lake County State's Attorney's Office Cyber Lab to extract and analyze its contents, the Country Herald reports. That digital evidence, combined with fingerprints recovered from the handgun itself, ultimately helped investigators identify Perez as the suspect, the outlet notes.
Lake County Sheriff John Idleburg credited detectives with sticking with the case even after the suspect got away in February. “Even when someone flees the scene, the investigation doesn’t stop there,” Idleburg said, adding that detectives followed the evidence to identify the suspect and make an arrest.
Arrest and Charges
Perez was taken into custody without incident at his Beach Park home on Wednesday, October 21, according to FOX 32 Chicago. The Lake County State's Attorney's Office approved five felony charges against him: one count of armed habitual criminal, a Class X felony; one count of unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, a Class 2 felony; and three counts of aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon, all Class 4 felonies, per the Country Herald's reporting.
Perez appeared in court on October 22, and a judge ordered him detained pending trial, according to the Lake and McHenry County Scanner. As the Country Herald notes, the charges remain allegations, and Perez is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
A History of Prior Gun Convictions
Perez's record includes two prior felony convictions involving weapons. He pleaded guilty to armed robbery in 2010 and served seven years in the Illinois Department of Corrections, according to the Lake and McHenry County Scanner. He later pleaded guilty to aggravated discharge of a firearm in 2019, serving four more years in prison before his release, the outlet reports.
