Greenwood police recovered the body of a 66-year-old woman from Indianapolis out of the water Tuesday, launching a death investigation near South Park Boulevard close to the East Main Street exit. Her identity has not yet been released, and investigators say many basic questions about what happened remain unanswered.
According to Fox 59, officers responded to the area of South Park Boulevard near the East Main Street exit, where they retrieved the woman's body from the water. The Greenwood Police Department confirmed the response to the outlet, though few additional details about how the discovery unfolded have been made public.
The Johnson County Coroner's Office will formally identify the woman once next-of-kin notifications have been completed, the station reports. Her exact cause and manner of death will also be determined once an autopsy is conducted at a later time, per the same account.
Investigation Still in Early Stages
As of now, the case remains under investigation, and authorities have not released further information about the circumstances surrounding the discovery. The station's report does not indicate when additional findings, including the autopsy results or the woman's identity, might be released.
Greenwood has seen other bodies recovered from water in recent months. In March, a body was reportedly found by someone walking near Swartz Crossing and North State Road 135 in a separate Johnson County case, and the coroner later identified the deceased as a missing 70-year-old man, according to WTHR. Similar death investigations have followed bodies found in Indianapolis-area ponds, including a 2025 case in Castleton and a 2024 case on the city's near northeast side.
For now, the Johnson County Coroner's Office and Greenwood police have not disclosed any further details about Tuesday's discovery. Hoodline will update this story as more information becomes available.
