A Carmel teenager fishing with his brother in the Delaware Trace neighborhood on Tuesday ended up pulling an adult, a toddler and an infant from a retention pond after someone lost control of a double stroller and it went into the water. Maddox Larger called 911, got all three people to shore, and performed rescue breathing before emergency responders could arrive.
A Fishing Trip Interrupted
According to a Carmel Fire Department Facebook post published Tuesday, Larger was fishing with his brother when he saw an individual lose control of a double stroller near the pond. The stroller and its occupants ended up in the water, and Larger moved quickly, jumping in to reach an adult, a toddler and an infant who needed help. The department credited him with bringing all three safely to shore.
Per the same account, Larger called 911 once he realized the severity of the situation, then performed rescue breathing on scene. The Fire Department did not detail the exact sequence of events beyond identifying the location as the Delaware Trace neighborhood and the body of water as a retention pond. Carmel officials framed the teenager's response simply: Maddox, thank you for stepping up when it mattered most.
Straight From the Pond to the Pool
Larger is identified in the post as a senior 1 athlete, and rather than taking the rest of the day off after the rescue, he headed to swim practice. His coaches were on hand to photograph him there, a detail the Fire Department included as a coda to the account of his actions earlier that day. The Carmel Swim Club has a website.
