Fall colors are approaching peak at Starved Rock and Matthiessen state parks, according to a freshly published photo gallery documenting the scene across both Illinois Valley landmarks. The images capture vibrant fall colors, including foliage along Starved Rock's west entrance road.

The gallery, published by Shaw Local, pairs Starved Rock State Park in Utica with Matthiessen State Park. It includes a view of foliage along Starved Rock's west entrance road. The gallery was authored by Scott Anderson, who has covered news, sports and events in the Illinois Valley for more than 15 years.

A Pattern That Tends To Repeat Each Fall

This is not the first time cameras have caught these parks mid-transformation in the final stretch of October. A year ago, an aerial shot captured color near Lovers Leap at Starved Rock on Oct. 31, 2025, and in 2024 an aerial view showed fall colors over Starved Rock on Oct. 24. Back in 2021, trees were reported at full peak along Illinois Route 71 inside the park by Nov. 1, according to Starved Rock Country.

That repeat timing lines up with what the hiking group Starved Rock Hikers has found in its own tracking. The group's new interactive Fall Colors Tracker, which combines local observations, historical trends and weather data, notes that observations from 2019 through 2025 show the final two weeks of October have generally produced some of the most vibrant color around Starved Rock. The group is careful to caveat that conditions can vary considerably year to year, so the tracker offers an estimate rather than a guaranteed peak date, and it says the tool will keep updating as the season progresses.

Forecasters Disagree On Exact Timing This Year

Statewide, predictions for when 2026's color will crest have not lined up neatly. The Chicago Tribune quoted a forecast anticipating the third week of October as the peak window this year, while the Central Illinois Proud weather team described central Illinois as sitting at moderate to high color in late October with peak still expected the following week.

Those differing timelines reflect how localized fall color can be, even within a single state. For now, the latest images out of the Illinois Valley suggest Starved Rock and Matthiessen are closing in on that colorful crest, even if the exact date remains a moving target.
