A 15-year-old girl has been missing for days, and her grandfather, Charles Mitchell, lives near the intersection of West 29th and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Streets on Indianapolis's near northwest side. He says the last thing they did together was pray before he went to bed. Journey Mitchell was last seen on Oct. 17 in the 800 block of West 29th Street, and police now say new information has led them to believe she may possibly be in danger.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officials are asking for the public's help finding Journey, according to fox59.com. She is described as around 4 feet 4 inches tall with brown hair and brown eyes, and she was last seen wearing a dark blue sweatshirt and dark blue sweatpants. Indianapolis police asked the public to help find Journey on Thursday, and in a Thursday night alert, IMPD said that new information led detectives to believe she may possibly be in danger.
Her grandfather, Charles Mitchell, told WISH-TV that he last saw his granddaughter after they prayed together Friday night before he went to bed. Journey had just turned 15 on Tuesday. He said he does not know whether she went somewhere on her own, but he fears she may have left with a man old enough to drive and buy liquor.
Friends Stayed Home While Journey Was Last Seen Saturday
Journey was last seen Saturday, according to the same account from her grandfather. He said Journey and her friends had discussed taking a fall-break trip, but her friends ultimately stayed home. An Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department missing-persons investigator has been working with Charles Mitchell to determine whether Journey ran away on her own.
IMPD has asked anyone who locates Journey to call 911 immediately. That guidance came alongside the department's public appeal for information on her whereabouts, as the family and investigators continue trying to piece together what happened after she was last seen near West 29th Street.
Community Groups Help Spread the Word
Journey's school has agreed to distribute flyers about her disappearance, part of a broader community effort to get her picture and description in front of as many people as possible. Her church has also helped spread word about her disappearance, and the Crown Hill neighborhood association has joined in those efforts as well.
No further details about Journey's whereabouts have been released, and it remains unclear what happened after she was last seen Saturday. Anyone with information is urged to contact police immediately.
