Police are investigating the death of an infant under the age of 6 months who died overnight at a home in the area of 1500 W. Napa Avenue in Bluffdale. After waiting for a search warrant, detectives and the medical examiner entered the residence.
Detectives Hold Back Pending Warrant
The Bluffdale Police Department is leading the investigation into the infant's death, according to FOX 13 News, which reported that detectives and the medical examiner entered the home after waiting for a search warrant. The outlet reported the child died sometime overnight and that police were still on scene at the residence. FOX 13 News said it would continue following the story as more details emerge.
Bluffdale does not run its own police force. Instead, local law enforcement is handled under an interlocal agreement by the Saratoga Springs Police Department, which operates the Bluffdale City Precinct, according to the City of Bluffdale.
Why Detectives Waited Outside
Detectives waited for a search warrant before entering the home. Once any criminal findings or prosecutorial decisions arise from the investigation, they would fall under the jurisdiction of the Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office, since Bluffdale sits within Salt Lake County.
How Utah Reviews Infant Deaths
Cases like this one are eventually examined by a specialized state panel. The Utah Department of Health and Human Services maintains an interagency Child Fatality Review Committee, established in 1992, which reviews all Sudden Unexpected Infant Deaths and other unexplained child fatalities statewide to analyze risk factors, according to the National Center for Fatality Review and Prevention.
Utah recorded an infant mortality rate of 5.2 deaths per 1,000 live births in 2023, totaling 233 infant deaths, per the Utah Department of Health and Human Services.
No further details about the circumstances of the Bluffdale infant's death had been released as of Wednesday. This is another major police investigation Hoodline has covered in Bluffdale, following a body found during a traffic stop investigation reported in January 2025.
