Johnathan Macedo plans to devote more attention to Peke’s Pozole, the Archer Heights restaurant he runs with his mother, Petra Guerrero. Peke’s opened at 4720 S. Pulaski Rd. on May 17, 2018, and later moved to 4710 S. Pulaski Rd., the Chicago Sun-Times reported in its profile of the family business. That story also reported that the restaurant added cocktails and a pozole flight, which lets customers sample all three varieties in one order.

Macedo plans to close Itz-Chel by Peke’s, at 1144 W. 18th St., after its final dinner service Sunday, Oct. 4. The restaurant opened in February and served Mayan-focused Mexican food, including Yucatán-style cochinita pibil, mole and picanha tacos on handmade blue corn tortillas, according to Block Club Chicago’s February report.

Plans for Peke’s Pozole

Macedo announced the closure on social media. In its report on the announcement, Block Club Chicago said he intends to expand Peke’s Pozole and is considering a second location. Macedo also told the outlet that operating Itz-Chel required substantial labor and expense.

Final service details

Block Club Chicago reported that customers returned after learning of the closure, and that more than half of Itz-Chel’s tables were occupied Wednesday evening. The restaurant’s reported final-week hours are 5-11 p.m. Thursday, 4-11 p.m. Friday and noon-11 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, with the last dinner service on Sunday.
