Judge Deidre Dyer ordered Jose Reyes Valenzuela, 42, held pending trial after granting prosecutors’ detention petition, according to CWB Chicago. Valenzuela faces three counts of aggravated battery in connection with an October 12 incident outside La Puerta Negra, at 7124 North Clark Street.
Prosecutors allege that Valenzuela stabbed a 40-year-old patron in the back and side and later pursued him with a knife in a parking lot. CWB Chicago reported that the victim had arrived around 10:40 p.m. with a companion, while Valenzuela was there with two coworkers. An argument involving the companion and Valenzuela’s group preceded the incident, prosecutors said.
The victim’s companion called 911 after finding him, and the victim was taken to a hospital, according to CWB Chicago. Police recovered a box cutter from Valenzuela’s pants and a second metal knife with blood on its blade; prosecutors said both were swabbed for DNA. CWB Chicago also reported that Valenzuela told detectives he had blacked out and could not remember what happened in the parking lot.
In its October 13 report, the Chicago Tribune said the victim suffered an abdominal laceration and was listed in fair condition at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston.
