Miami is getting a relatively quiet start Saturday, with temperatures in the low 70s and mostly sunny skies, but the calm will be short-lived. A stiff northeast breeze will build through the afternoon, and the weekend turns markedly rougher as rain, high surf and unusually high tides raise flood concerns along the coast.
Saturday's high is expected to reach about 83 degrees, with isolated showers possible along the Atlantic coastline during the day. Northeast winds will strengthen, with gusts potentially reaching 25 to 35 mph, according to the National Weather Service in Miami.
Coastal Flood Watch Starts Saturday Night
A Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect for coastal Miami-Dade through 2 a.m. Sunday, while a Coastal Flood Watch runs from late Saturday night through Monday evening. Moderate flooding is expected around high-tide cycles, with low-lying roads and property most exposed; major coastal flooding remains possible as winds and tides peak early next week.
There is also a high risk of rip currents through Monday evening. Swimmers should stay near lifeguards, and anyone caught in a rip current should float, avoid fighting the current and move parallel to shore when possible.
Sunday Brings The Bigger Storm Threat
Sunday's high should again be near 83 degrees, with precipitation probabilities of 70% to 80% over the eastern metro and showers and thunderstorms possible from late morning through the afternoon. Breezy northeast winds are expected, with strong gusts possible Sunday through Monday, and the weather service warns that heavy rain could cause localized urban and flash flooding in poor-drainage areas.
The updated outlook is a more serious follow-up to Friday's Hoodline forecast, with coastal flood concerns now extending through Monday evening. Monday is expected to bring more showers and thunderstorms, an 83-degree high, winds of at least 25 mph in many locations and possible gusts of 35 to 40 mph.
Wet, Windy Pattern Lingers Into Next Week
Tuesday stays breezy with scattered showers and thunderstorms and a high near 83 degrees. Rain chances gradually ease later in the week, but Wednesday through Friday still bring chances for showers or storms and highs in the mid-80s.
For residents near the waterfront, the main concerns are water piling up during high tide, rough surf and gusty winds that can move loose outdoor items. Drivers should never go around barricades or through water of unknown depth, and boaters should expect hazardous conditions through at least midweek.
