A domestic violence call to a Merritt Drive home in La Vergne on Oct. 25 ended with a suspect facing two counts of attempted first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated assault and a string of additional felony charges, after police said the victim reported being physically assaulted and strangled to the point of losing consciousness.
According to rutherfordsource.com, La Vergne police responded to the residence on Oct. 25 and found a victim who said she had been strangled until she passed out. The victim was taken to a local hospital for medical evaluation, the outlet reported, while officers located the suspect near the residence shortly after arriving on scene.
Detectives Build the Case Through Interviews and Evidence
Detectives then conducted interviews and collected evidence as the investigation unfolded, per the same account. That work led to the filing of multiple charges: two counts of attempted first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated assault, aggravated burglary, domestic assault and simple possession of a Schedule II controlled substance, the station reported.
The La Vergne Police Department, in a Facebook post announcing the charges, thanked the officers, detectives and crime scene personnel who assisted with the investigation. The department's post did not name the suspect or the victim.
Conflicting Accounts on Who the Additional Charges Involve
There is a discrepancy in reporting over exactly who one of the attempted-murder and aggravated-assault charges involves. Rutherfordsource.com reported that police said one of the attempted murder charges and one of the aggravated assault charges involve a minor. However, the La Vergne Police Department’s Facebook post states that one attempted murder charge and one aggravated assault charge involve an unborn child. Hoodline could not independently verify which account is accurate, and police have not publicly clarified the discrepancy.
A Second La Vergne Case Involving a Child in September
This is not the first time La Vergne police have filed attempted-murder charges tied to a domestic incident involving a child this year. In September, a La Vergne woman was arrested after police said she assaulted a juvenile during a domestic incident and attempted to take the child’s life, according to wsmv.com. In that case, the woman was charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated child abuse, felony reckless endangerment, two counts of aggravated domestic assault and resisting arrest, and her bond was set at $950,000, the station reported.
No court docket, bond amount or hearing information has been released for the Merritt Drive case, and police have not disclosed the suspect’s or victim’s identities. The investigation remains active.
