A 26-year-old man died after being shot inside a home on the 3600 block of West 5th Avenue in East Garfield Park, according to Chicago police. Officers found him in a hallway with multiple gunshot wounds at about 1:36 a.m., and he was rushed to a nearby hospital where he later died.
According to ABC7 Chicago, police located the victim at the residence early Saturday morning and transported him to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police are now conducting a homicide investigation, the station reports. Mount Sinai's Level 1 Adult Trauma Center, located at 15th Street and California Avenue, treats roughly 2,000 trauma patients a year and serves as a critical safety net for gunshot victims across the West Side, according to RUSH University.
A Block With a Violent Past
This is not the first act of gun violence on that stretch of West 5th Avenue. In June 2025, two men, ages 21 and 26, were shot multiple times near the sidewalk on the same block and self-transported to Stroger Hospital, per CBS News Chicago. Both of those victims survived, though it remains unclear whether Saturday's homicide is connected to that earlier shooting.
The address falls within the Chicago Police Department's 11th District, known as the Harrison District, which covers East Garfield Park, West Garfield Park and Humboldt Park. District 11 headquarters sits nearby at 3151 West Harrison Street, the department notes. Homicide investigations originating in East Garfield Park are handled by Area Four Detectives, a unit based out of that same Harrison Street station that the City of Chicago reopened in 2020 specifically to bring detectives closer to West Side crime scenes.
District Numbers Tell a Mixed Story
Chicago police statistics paint a complicated picture of violence in the area. The 11th District recorded 35 murders year-to-date as of the week ending September 27, a 3% increase from 34 during the same period in 2025, but a steep 44% decline from the 63 murders logged in both 2022 and 2023, per CPD's public safety data. Shooting incidents in the district have also fallen, with 123 recorded through late September compared to 143 over the same stretch last year, a 14% drop.
Recent Violence Nearby Draws Scrutiny
The neighborhood has seen other violent incidents in recent weeks. Cook County prosecutors charged two 15-year-old boys on October 6 with attempted murder in connection with a September 1 shooting outside an East Garfield Park restaurant, according to CWB Chicago, which reported that federal agents conducting covert surveillance helped CPD locate the suspects. East Garfield Park sits within Chicago's 28th Ward, represented by Alderman Jason Ervin, who chairs the city council's budget committee and regularly convenes community safety discussions alongside 11th District police leadership, per the Civilian Office of Police Accountability.
If investigators identify and charge a suspect in Saturday's killing, Illinois law mandates a sentence of 20 to 60 years in prison for a first-degree murder conviction, with no eligibility for probation, according to Stavros Law Offices. The state's Truth in Sentencing rules would require an offender to serve at least 85% of that sentence.
Police are conducting a homicide investigation and have not released information about a motive or suspect. Hoodline has covered a similar case in the neighborhood last month, when another man was found fatally shot inside a home with no immediate arrests.
