A man was shot and killed on the 2700 block of South Karlov Avenue in Chicago's Little Village neighborhood early Sunday, marking the second gun violence incident to strike the Southwest Side community in less than two days. Police responding to a person-shot call found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound to his left shoulder. He was rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The shooting was reported by CBS Chicago, which noted that as of early Sunday, officials had no information on what led to the shooting and no suspect was in custody. Harrison Area detectives, part of a West Side-focused division reconstituted in 2020 and based out of the Harrison Area Police Headquarters at 3151 W. Harrison Ave., are investigating, according to Police1. The victim's age has not been released.
A Weekend of Gunfire in Little Village
The fatal shooting comes less than 36 hours after four men were wounded when a gunman inside a white sedan opened fire as they exited a building in the 4000 block of West 26th Street, a separate incident Hoodline previously reported. The back-to-back shootings add to a string of gun violence that has touched Little Village in recent weeks, including a fatal shooting on the same block as a 2021 killing earlier this month and a shooting that wounded a teenage girl in September.
Gunshot victims from Little Village are routinely taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in neighboring North Lawndale, an adult Level 1 Trauma Center that treats roughly 2,000 trauma patients a year. Nearly 80% of its patients rely on Medicaid or have no insurance at all, per Chicago Health Magazine, underscoring the hospital's role as a safety net for the West Side's gun violence victims.
No ShotSpotter, No Suspect
Since the city decommissioned its ShotSpotter acoustic gunshot detection system in September 2024, police response has relied more heavily on calls from residents.
The outlet's data show Chicago Police Department statistics through August logged 289 homicides and 1,264 shooting victims citywide this year, a 1% decline in shooting victims compared with the same period in 2025. Even as the city tracks toward historically low numbers, Southwest Side neighborhoods like Little Village continue to see recurring violent incidents.
Little Village, officially designated as South Lawndale, has a Latino population of 56,000, according to the Great Cities Institute at UIC. The neighborhood's 26th Street commercial corridor generated $177 million in taxable sales across 294 businesses in 2024, the institute's data show, even as the community grapples with ongoing gun violence.
Potential Charges If a Suspect Is Identified
No arrests have been announced in the case. If a suspect is eventually identified and charged with first-degree murder, a conviction carries a prison sentence of 20 to 60 years. Prosecutors could also pursue a charge of Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm under 720 ILCS 5/24-1.2, a Class 1 felony punishable by four to 15 years, in connection with related gunfire in the area.
Harrison Area detectives have not released additional details about a motive or possible suspects in the Karlov Avenue shooting. Anyone with information is encouraged to come forward as investigators work to piece together what happened before dawn Sunday.
