A man is dead after a shooting Friday night in the 3900 block of West Grand Avenue in Phoenix, and police still have not identified a suspect or a motive. Officers responded to the scene at around 9:30 p.m. and found the victim already dead, according to the Phoenix Police Department.
The Phoenix Police Department confirmed the shooting occurred along the busy commercial corridor, and officers remained at the scene as the investigation got underway, as reported by ABC15 Arizona. Police asked the public to avoid the area while they worked the scene. No details about the victim's identity, a possible motive, or any suspects or fleeing vehicles have been released.
A Corridor With a History of Violence
West Grand Avenue is Phoenix's only major surface arterial that runs diagonally instead of following the city's standard cardinal grid, a quirk that creates offset intersections and dense commercial stretches along its length, according to background compiled from Wikipedia. West Grand Avenue is also part of U.S. Route 60.
Friday's shooting is not the only recent incident of gun violence along the broader Grand Avenue stretch. Hoodline previously reported on a fatal shooting near Peoria, which investigators believed was an attempted murder-suicide between two people who knew each other, according to a report from FOX 10 Phoenix.
Violent Crime Trending Down Citywide
The shooting comes even as Phoenix's overall homicide numbers have fallen sharply in recent years. Citywide homicides dropped to roughly 151 in 2024 from a peak of 223 in 2022, a decline of more than 30 percent over two years, according to data compiled by Omnilert. Statewide, FBI figures released in September showed Arizona's murder rate fell 15.7 percent in 2025, with major cities including Phoenix driving the decrease, as reported by 12News.
That downward trend has continued into this year. Data from the Major Cities Chiefs Association showed violent crime across major categories in Phoenix kept falling through the first quarter of 2026 compared to the same period a year earlier, according to Axios. The Phoenix Police Department has also leaned on targeted enforcement in West Phoenix, including an operation called Operation Full Court Press that led to 570 arrests and 25 firearm seizures, the department said in a release from the City of Phoenix.

If police eventually identify and arrest a suspect, the charges filed would hinge on what investigators determine about intent. No charges have been announced in connection with Friday's shooting, and the Phoenix Police Department's homicide unit continues to investigate.
