A man in his 50s was hospitalized Friday afternoon after being grazed by a bullet in a shooting that erupted along the Metrorail tracks in Historic Overtown, shutting down train service between two stations for hours. The gunfire broke out just after 4 p.m. near 511 NW 11th Street, sending the victim to Jackson Memorial Hospital with a wound to his arm.

The shooting unfolded on elevated tracks spanning several blocks along Northwest 7th Avenue, with Miami Fire Rescue confirming the gunfire occurred on the rail right-of-way rather than inside a train car, according to CBS Miami. As reported by WSVN 7News, a Miami police officer was seen walking between the tracks carrying a long gun as a train sat stopped at the scene, while the wounded man walked alongside paramedics before being loaded into the back of an ambulance. No subjects were reported in custody as authorities continued investigating.

The location sits just two blocks east of Culmer Station, a walk-up stop at 701 NW 11th Street that serves both the Green and Orange Metrorail lines. The shooting also occurred near Booker T. Washington High School; no students were on campus at the time.

Trains Halted, Bus Bridge Deployed

Because the shooting happened on the elevated tracks, officials had to temporarily halt Metrorail service between the Allapattah and Douglas Road stations and establish a bus bridge to shuttle riders around the closure, per the same CBS Miami account. Miami-Dade Transit officials attributed the disruption to police activity and warned riders to expect delays, WSVN 7News reported. Transit crews set up a shuttle bridge during the closure.

The Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office is investigating the shooting. Metrorail is a rapid-transit heavy-rail system spanning 24.4 miles and 23 stations and carrying more than 50,000 weekday passengers, according to Miami-Dade County.

Fare Hike Lands Days Before Shooting

The shooting comes just three days after Miami-Dade County commissioners approved the system's first fare increase in 13 years, raising standard Metrorail and Metrobus fares from $2.25 to $2.75 starting in January 2027. The hike, reported by WLRN, is projected to generate $9.2 million annually to help preserve late-night transit service.

Riders can also report concerns through the county's Go Miami-Dade Transit mobile app. Hoodline reported that a new shuttle links District 2 and 3 neighborhoods to transit hubs.

Authorities have not said whether the gunman and victim entered the track right-of-way through Culmer Station, nor whether surveillance video captured a shooter fleeing into Overtown. It also remains unclear whether the incident will prompt additional security sweeps along the heavy-rail corridor. The investigation into Friday's shooting remains active.
