A man was fatally shot Friday night in San Francisco's Potrero Hill neighborhood, in a location that borders Starr King Elementary School, according to police. Officers found the victim suffering from gunshot wounds, and he died at the scene despite paramedics' efforts to save him.
San Francisco police officers responded to the shooting on the 1100 block of Wisconsin Street on Friday night, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. The newspaper reported that the location where the man was killed borders Starr King Elementary School, though it did not specify the exact distance between the shooting scene and the campus. San Francisco police are investigating the case as a homicide.
Authorities had not immediately released the victim's identity as of Saturday, nor had they released information about the search for a shooter, per the same report. It remains unclear whether police have identified or arrested anyone in connection with the shooting.
A School With Mandarin Immersion and After-Care Programs
Starr King Elementary offers two Mandarin Immersion classes beginning in kindergarten, according to its San Francisco Unified School District profile. The campus also hosts an on-site after-school program run by YMCA Urban Services, which operates Monday through Friday until 6 p.m., per the district's listing. The Chronicle's report did not say whether weekend school operations or programming were affected by Friday's shooting.
Part of a Pattern of Violence in Potrero Hill
Friday night's shooting is not the first fatal gunfire to strike the neighborhood this year. On Feb. 27, two people were shot around 10 a.m. near Dakota and 25th streets in the Potrero Hill public housing neighborhood, with one dying at the scene and the other suffering life-threatening injuries, according to The Mercury News. A third person, a juvenile, was taken to a hospital for superficial injuries in that incident but had not been shot, the outlet reported. That February shooting was the fifth homicide reported citywide that month, and police crime data identified it as the city's eighth homicide of 2026 overall, the third involving a firearm, according to Mission Local. No arrests had been made in that case as of early that Friday afternoon, the outlet reported.
Gun violence has also struck elsewhere in the city this year. On March 4, a person was shot around 1:30 a.m. in the 100 block of Sixth Street in the South of Market neighborhood and later died at a hospital, per the Mercury News report. That victim was later identified as 43-year-old Carl Jones Jr. A preliminary crime trends document reviewed by the Police Commission on April 1, 2026, indicated that homicides were up 250% year over year.
