A Burger King employee was shot in the abdomen Monday during a physical altercation with a customer at the restaurant on Expressway Drive in Manchester, Tennessee, and is expected to survive, according to police. Officers located two customers who had fled the scene at a motel roughly two miles away within hours of the shooting, and one suspect is now in custody.
The Manchester Police Department responded to the Burger King after an emergency call about a shooting, as reported by WZTV. The restaurant sits at 56 Expressway Drive, directly off Interstate 24 at Exit 114, near other businesses, according to Tennessee Logos. Investigators said an argument broke out between the employee and a male customer following an earlier interaction involving that customer and a female customer, and the dispute quickly turned physical before the employee was shot.
The victim, an adult male, suffered what police described as an apparent gunshot wound to his abdomen. Emergency personnel treated him at the scene before transporting him to Unity Hospital, and police said he is expected to survive. As of the station's latest update, the employee's exact condition remained unknown. The hospital, formally known as Unity Medical Center, is a 49-bed acute care facility at 481 Interstate Drive that operates a 24-hour emergency department, per the American Hospital Directory, making it Coffee County's primary option for treating acute trauma like a gunshot wound.
Customers Tracked Down at Nearby Motel
After the shooting, two customers left the restaurant, and officers located and interviewed both of them at the Southern Inn. The motel is at 2259 Hillsboro Boulevard, across the street from the Burger King, according to Booking.com listings for the property. The station's report indicates one suspect was taken into custody following those interviews, though the shooting remains under investigation. Police said there is no active threat to the public.
Any formal charging decision will fall to 14th Judicial District Attorney General Craig Northcott, who holds prosecutorial jurisdiction over violent crime cases originating in Coffee County and was first elected in 2014 before winning re-election in 2022, according to the ACLU of Tennessee. Tennessee law could support an aggravated assault charge under state statute, since an intentional assault involving a deadly weapon or causing serious bodily injury qualifies as a Class C felony punishable by three to 15 years in prison, per Justia Law. Whether prosecutors will pursue that charge, a more serious count, or something else entirely has not been determined.
A Broader Pattern of Workplace Violence
The shooting lands within a documented national pattern of violence against retail and customer-service workers. Bureau of Labor Statistics data shows that 470 American workers died from workplace violence in 2024, with firearms involved in 80.6 percent of workplace homicides, according to an analysis from IntelliSee. The same federal data recorded 77,780 serious nonfatal workplace violence injuries across private industry that year. Separately, Bureau of Labor Statistics figures cited by Building Security Services show that nearly a quarter of all workplace homicides nationwide in 2024, 24.6 percent, occurred inside retail and customer-service establishments like fast-food restaurants.
Manchester Police, headquartered at 200 West Fort Street, serve as the primary agency investigating crimes within city limits, with the Coffee County Sheriff's Department handling surrounding unincorporated areas, according to the City of Manchester. Coffee County's more serious or complex violent crime cases have at times drawn investigative support from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation at a district attorney's request, as seen in an earlier Beechgrove shooting case this year. No TBI involvement has been confirmed in the Burger King shooting as of the latest update.
