A new Chick-fil-A is set to open at 4200 E. Covell Rd. in Edmond at 6 a.m. on October 8, bringing the chain's signature chicken sandwiches and waffle potato fries to the city's north side. Guests who show up dressed in cow spots that morning can score a free entrée, part of the chain's long-running opening-day tradition.
A New Spot on Covell Road
The Covell-and-Sooner restaurant will serve the company's standard menu, according to okcfox.com, which first reported the opening date and time. Chick-fil-A itself describes the new location as a way to connect with the neighborhood, stating on its website, “We’re excited to be coming to the Edmond community and share Chicken Sandwiches, Waffle Potato Fries™ and more with you,” according to Chick-fil-A.
Greg Harjo is the local owner-operator of the new restaurant, per the station's report. Harjo said north Edmond's growth is exciting and that he's grateful to continue serving the community, and he said he hopes to create a welcoming restaurant where families and neighbors can gather, connect and feel valued.
Free Food, Cow Costumes and a Charity Donation
Guests who visit the restaurant dressed in cow spots on opening day will receive one free entrée, limited to one per customer and subject to availability, the chain notes. For lunch and dinner, that means guests can choose the Chick-fil-A Chicken Sandwich, Spicy Chicken Sandwich, 8-count Grilled Nuggets, 8-count Chick-fil-A Nuggets or a 5-count Nugget Kid's Meal, according to the same account.
Beyond the costume giveaway, Chick-fil-A, Inc. says it makes a $25,000 donation to a local Feeding America partner for every new U.S. restaurant that opens. As with all its locations, the Covell-and-Sooner restaurant will remain closed on Sundays so team members can rest or worship if they choose.
From Planning Commission to Opening Day
The project cleared a local hurdle back in January, when Edmond's Planning Commission approved a 5,500-square-foot Chick-fil-A planned for the corner of Covell Road and Sooner Road, according to Edmond InBox. During public comment on the proposal, a nearby resident raised concerns about erosion and drainage affecting adjacent property, and city engineering staff responded that erosion controls would be reviewed and monitored as the project proceeds, the newsletter reported.
This isn't Harjo's first Chick-fil-A in Edmond. He previously opened a location at Second Street and Bryant Avenue in 2010, then opened a second Edmond restaurant on May 25, 2017, at 1025 W. I-35 Frontage Road, according to the Journal Record. That 2017 restaurant measured 4,515 square feet, with a two-story indoor play area, dual drive-thru lanes and seating for 180 customers, and was planned to employ 75 people, the outlet reported at the time. It was also expected to be the 21st Chick-fil-A within a 25-mile radius of Oklahoma City, part of 102 new locations the chain had scheduled to open nationwide that year. Chick-fil-A opened its first Oklahoma restaurant back in 1976 inside the Sooner Mall in Norman, per the same report.
