Fishers police are investigating complaints involving the Nickel Plate Trail.
Tunnel Safety Features
The south tunnel sits beneath 116th Street, a stretch WRTV has reported is one of the trail's defining features as the Nickel Plate Trail network has expanded in recent years. The passage is already outfitted with safety measures: lighting that brightens the interior after dark and security cameras positioned on both ends, according to FOX59.
Fishers police previously told WRTV that, although no particular stretch raised concern at the time, the department was increasing patrols to keep pace with rising foot traffic.
Standing Safety Advice for Trail Users
That earlier guidance from the department emphasized basic precautions for anyone using the trail: staying alert to surroundings and keeping headphone volume low enough to hear what's happening nearby. The city also advised that anyone uneasy about walking alone, especially after dark, bring a companion rather than go solo.
In a separate case, FOX59 reported that police said a dark-colored sedan hit a bicyclist at the Nickel Plate Trail crossing just north of Lantern Road and Technology Drive around 7:15 p.m. on Jan. 17. The cyclist sustained minor injuries, and officers sought the public's help identifying the driver. That incident is unrelated to the current abuse complaints.
Trail extent and earlier incident
The Fishers Parks Department says the Nickel Plate Trail spans five miles through Fishers, from 96th Street to 146th Street. That description gives the route's length and endpoints but does not establish how trail use has changed or provide a dated expansion timeline. The earlier hit-and-run report described the crash and the cyclist's injuries, but did not state whether police later identified the driver or what the case's outcome was.
No arrests or charges have been announced in connection with the complaints, and police have not said how many incidents have been reported or when they occurred.
