A person was left in critical condition Tuesday evening after a shooting on Indianapolis' east side, with officers finding the victim near the 400 block of North Bradley Avenue and no suspect description released. Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers responded to the area at approximately 6:45 p.m. after reports of a person shot, and the investigation remains active with no arrests announced.
According to WTHR, officers found one person who had been shot after arriving near the 400 block of North Bradley Avenue, and that person was in critical condition, per police. IMPD has not shared further information about a suspect or motive, and the station notes the situation remains a developing story that may be updated as details emerge.
The 400 block of North Bradley Avenue sits on Indianapolis' Eastside between East Michigan Street and North Sherman Drive, a stretch of largely residential blocks near busier commercial cross streets. The North District operates out of a facility at 3120 East 30th Street.
A Pattern of Eastside Violence This Fall
Just five days earlier, on October 8, a 53-year-old man was killed in an overnight shooting following a parking lot disturbance near Ritter Avenue and 21st Street, according to earlier Hoodline reporting. That case also saw no suspect immediately apprehended. Other recent Eastside incidents this fall have included a double shooting, underscoring that gun violence remains an ongoing concern in specific corridors of the city even as broader trends improve.
Citywide Numbers Show Steep Declines
The Bradley Avenue shooting comes even as Indianapolis has seen some of its sharpest crime reductions in years. Preliminary IMPD data released in September showed citywide homicides fell 20% and overall violent crime dropped 29% during the first half of 2026, according to a report from FOX59. Non-fatal shootings decreased between 33% and 40% in 2026 compared to the year before, per the same report.
Those gains follow a longer downward trend from the city's modern peak. Indianapolis recorded 271 criminal homicides in 2021, a record high, before declining to roughly 173 in 2024 — a 36% drop from that peak, according to data compiled by Omnilert.
