More than 6,000 Rocky Mountain Power customers across Salt Lake County woke up to a power outage Monday morning, with Midvale, Sandy and surrounding communities hit hardest. The utility reported approximately 6,083 customers without electricity, and as of midday the cause remained unknown.
According to ABC4 Utah, Rocky Mountain Power said the outage's cause was still under investigation. The company estimated that power would be restored to affected customers around 3:30 p.m. Monday, though no further detail on the outage's origin had been released by the utility at that time.
Rocky Mountain Power is directing customers to its website or a text-based alert system for live updates rather than waiting on word from crews in the field. The company recommends texting STAT to 759677 for restoration updates, the station's report notes, while customers who still need to report an outage can text OUT to the same number, per Rocky Mountain Power. The utility says its online outage map is typically refreshed every 15 minutes.
A Familiar Pattern Along the Wasatch Front
Monday's outage is only the latest in a string of large-scale power disruptions to hit Salt Lake County in recent months, though causes and sizes have varied widely from incident to incident. On Jan. 11, 2026, a separate outage affected roughly 4,361 customers in Salt Lake City and surrounding areas, with KSL.com reporting that the cause was also under investigation and restoration wasn't expected until 6 p.m. that evening.
A much larger event struck on Nov. 7, 2025, when more than 18,500 customers lost power after the loss of a substation, according to KUTV. That outage, initially estimated to last until 8:30 p.m., hit Millcreek hardest, with thousands more affected near the Murray-Holladay border. KUTV has also reported outages tied to a downed transmission line whose cause remained under investigation, underscoring how differently these incidents can play out.
Another outage left more than 14,000 Salt Lake County customers without power on a May 12 afternoon, with Rocky Mountain Power's outage map showing 109 separate outages affecting 14,030 customers around 4 p.m., ABC4 reported. By around 6 p.m. that day, fewer than 5,000 customers remained affected, though some restoration times stretched as late as 10:30 p.m. In yet another prior incident affecting more than 6,300 customers across the south Salt Lake Valley, Rocky Mountain Power attributed the outage to a circuit failure at a substation near 9000 South in Sandy, which serves Midvale, South Jordan, West Jordan and Sandy.
Red Cross Offers Guidance for Residents Without Power
With Monday's outage still active for thousands of households, the American Red Cross has issued guidance for residents waiting out the disruption. The organization recommends monitoring local alerts for updates, keeping food cold and discarding anything questionable, and unplugging appliances and electronics to prevent overloads or fire hazards once power returns.
The Red Cross also advises residents to take precautions against carbon monoxide poisoning when using gas appliances, to contact their support network to let others know what's happening, and to weigh whether to stay home or leave based on individual circumstances, including medical devices or heating and cooling needs. ABC4 says it will continue updating the story as more information becomes available.
