A man remained hospitalized with life-threatening injuries Sunday after a shooting on Camden Street in Raleigh, and police say the suspect they arrested the next day had been released on parole just five months earlier. Officers responded to a shots-fired call in the 200 block of Camden Street shortly before 7:20 p.m. Saturday and learned someone had been shot nearby.
Responding officers found a man with a gunshot wound and rushed him to the hospital, according to CBS 17. As of Sunday afternoon, the victim was still receiving medical treatment, police said. Investigators determined that the victim and the suspect had been speaking to each other just before the shooting, and that the suspect fled the scene afterward, per the station's report.
Suspect Identified and Arrested Within a Day
Raleigh police identified the suspect as 25-year-old Quincy Lamont Thompson Jr. of Raleigh and took him into custody Sunday, the day after the shooting, the same report notes. Thompson now faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, along with possession of a firearm by a felon.
That firearm charge stems from North Carolina's Felony Firearms Act, codified at G.S. 14-415.1, which bars convicted felons from possessing firearms. Records show Thompson was not given bond and was scheduled to make his first appearance in Wake County court Monday afternoon, according to the same account.
Out on Parole Since May
Court records cited in the report show Thompson pleaded guilty on Feb. 9 to possessing a Schedule II controlled substance with intent to sell, manufacture, and deliver. He was released on parole on May 10, meaning he had been out for roughly five months before Saturday's shooting. North Carolina's Department of Adult Correction maintains an Offender Search tool covering people on parole or probation across the state.
No further details have been released about the victim's identity or the circumstances that led to the confrontation on Camden Street. The case remains active as Thompson awaits his first court appearance in Wake County.
