A Richmond man is fighting for his life after fleeing a traffic stop and crashing his SUV into an Amazon delivery truck, a collision that left him in critical condition and under investigation by state accident reconstruction experts. Brian Burdette was behind the wheel of a red 2010 GMC Acadia when officers tried to pull him over near the intersection of Northwest Fifth and West Main streets, setting off a pursuit that ended several blocks away in a residential yard.
According to Fox 59, the Acadia fled from officers after the attempted stop and the pursuit reached the area of South 16th and South I streets. A Richmond Police Department social media post reported that the vehicle struck an Amazon delivery truck before coming to rest in a yard in the 900 block of South 16th Street. Burdette was first taken to a local hospital before being transported to a hospital in Dayton, Ohio, where he remained in critical condition, the outlet reported.
Drug Warrants and a Prior Conviction
The police department post cited by Fox 59 indicated Burdette reportedly had outstanding warrants for Level 2 and Level 6 felony drug charges at the time of the chase. Separately, kicks96.com reported that 41-year-old Brian Burdette was taken into custody and charged with dealing meth. The same report states that Burdette was convicted of sexual misconduct with a minor 15 years earlier and had failed to register as a sex offender on numerous occasions, according to kicks96.com.
The Indiana State Police accident reconstruction team is now investigating the crash, per Fox 59's reporting.
A Familiar and Deadly Pattern on Indiana Roads
Richmond has seen fatal pursuit crashes before. On March 11, 2013, a Richmond police pursuit ended when the fleeing vehicle left the roadway and struck two trees, killing the driver, according to the Pal-Item.
More Recent Crashes Across Indiana
Indiana recorded 18 fatalities caused by police chases in 2023, ranking 10th nationwide and tying with Ohio, according to the Indiana Capital Chronicle. That outlet also reported that a stolen Kia Sportage fleeing a Carmel police pursuit crossed the centerline on Meridian Street on June 14, 2025, striking the Honda Fit driven by Indianapolis man Kevin McKelvey, who died on June 29, 2025, after suffering injuries in the crash.
In September, a police chase in Indianapolis ended when the fleeing driver crashed head-on into a pickup truck in the 4800 block of Southeastern Avenue, according to WRTV. That station's report said a woman died and two people were injured, though a separate passage in the same report also described the pickup driver being taken to a hospital in critical condition before he later died — an account this article presents without resolving the discrepancy. WRTV has separately reported that NHTSA data showed 75 people died in Indiana police pursuit crashes between 2015 and 2022, with 35 percent of those deaths involving people who were not even part of the pursuit.
An analysis of NHTSA data from 2017 to 2021 found Indiana ranked eighth nationally for fatal crashes resulting from police pursuits, according to the Purdue Exponent, which reported 4,044 motor vehicle crashes statewide over that four-year span, including 62 deadly crashes tied to a police pursuit. No additional information on Burdette's final charges, a court date, or his current bond status has been reported beyond the Monday morning bond figure, and the full basis for the attempted traffic stop in Richmond remains unclear.
