Part of a Broader Drop in Indianapolis Violence This Year
The Versailles Drive shooting comes amid a broader decline in violent crime across Indianapolis this year. As of July 6, the city had recorded 53 homicides, down 20% compared to the same point the previous year, according to preliminary IMPD figures reported by WISH-TV.
Non-fatal shootings were also down 33% through early July, with 139 reported so far that year, the station noted. Overall violent crime had fallen 29%, while property crime dropped 13.5% over the same period, per the outlet's reporting on preliminary department data.
IMPD Chief Terry said at the time that the department would continue focusing on proactive policing and community partnerships, according to the same WISH-TV report. It remains unclear whether Thursday's shooting on Versailles Drive factors into those year-to-date statistics.
