A vehicle rolled up on an 18-year-old man as he walked near the sidewalk in the 3300 block of West 31st Street Saturday afternoon, and at least one person inside opened fire, striking him multiple times. Chicago police say the shooting happened around 3:16 p.m. in the Little Village neighborhood. The teen was rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital in serious condition.
According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the gunfire came from inside the approaching vehicle, and no suspect description has been released. Area Four detectives are leading the investigation, though police have not said whether the shooting was targeted or identified anyone in custody.
A String of Recent Shootings in the Neighborhood
Saturday's shooting is the latest in a series of violent incidents to hit Little Village in recent weeks. A drive-by shooting injured four men near West 26th Street and South Pulaski Road, according to ABC7 Chicago, which reported that a white sedan pulled up as the men exited a building and someone inside began firing. The station said the victims — ages 19, 25, 26 and 56 — were shot in the arm, hand, foot and leg respectively, and all were listed in good condition. WGN-TV reported the same shooting occurred in the 4000 block of West 26th Street, a location that conflicts with the cross-street description given elsewhere.
In a separate incident, two 18-year-old men were seriously wounded while sitting inside a vehicle in the 2800 block of South Sawyer Avenue near West 28th Street, per NBC Chicago. Police said an unknown offender fired on the pair and fled the scene without being identified.
Deadly Violence Returns to a Familiar Block
Little Village has also seen fatal violence on a block with a troubled history. A 22-year-old woman died after being shot while standing on the street in the 2800 block of West 23rd Street, Hoodline reported in earlier coverage of a fatal shooting. That same block saw a 34-year-old man fatally shot on Jan. 24, 2021, a killing that led to first-degree murder charges against a 28-year-old suspect. The block has also recorded nonfatal shootings involving a 28-year-old man in June 2024 and an 18-year-old in October 2022, according to the same report.
A community organization executive told Block Club Chicago that Little Village had seen an uptick in gun violence over the preceding six weeks. The outlet also reported that a New Life Centers peacekeeper was fatally shot Saturday night in an off-duty incident the organization's CEO described as unrelated to the neighborhood's other violence.
Citywide Numbers and a Changed Response System
Citywide, Chicago Police data through August 2026 recorded 1,264 shooting victims and 289 homicides, a roughly 1% decrease in shooting victims compared with the same period in 2025, per the same Hoodline report. That data arrives against the backdrop of a changed emergency-response landscape: Chicago ended its contract with the ShotSpotter acoustic gunshot detection system in September 2024, after which police response has relied more heavily on resident 911 calls.
No arrests have been announced in Saturday's shooting on West 31st Street, and police have not released information about the victim's identity beyond his age or provided an updated medical condition since he was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital. Area Four detectives continue to investigate.
