TriStar Centennial Medical Center has launched a $90 million overhaul of its children's and women's hospitals, pumping fresh investment into birthing suites and emergency care for newborns and kids across its Nashville campus. The hospital system says it is the largest investment of its kind in more than four decades.
The project, first reported by the Tennessean, centers on enhancing birthing suites alongside emergency care for newborns and children, building on services that already include a dedicated pediatric emergency department and a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for critically ill or premature infants, according to TriStar Centennial Children's Hospital. That pediatric ER runs around the clock with a team of board-certified and fellowship-trained pediatric emergency physicians on staff.
A Campus Already Built Around Growth
This isn't the first time TriStar Centennial has poured money into expanding its footprint. The hospital's children's emergency room, which opened in 2017, was Nashville's second such facility, per the same Tennessean report. Before that, construction firm Brasfield & Gorrie says it has spent roughly a decade shaping the Centennial campus, starting with a 418,000-square-foot expansion.
More recently, HCA Healthcare received unanimous approval for a $25 million rehabilitation-unit project at the same medical center, the outlet also reported.
What's Already in Place for Mothers and Babies
Some of the women's health upgrades at TriStar Centennial build on programs already running at the hospital. Doula care is offered free of charge to women delivering at the Women's Hospital, according to nashvillemedicalnews.com. The hospital had also planned to launch a Centennial Midwifery service with two dedicated midwife birthing suites on its Labor and Delivery floor, per the same source.
How Nashville's Expansion Compares
TriStar Centennial's move follows a similar, larger project at Texas Children's Pavilion for Women, which completed a multi-year expansion over the summer. That project added an expanded maternal-fetal medicine clinic, four dedicated Cesarean-section operating rooms and a specialized high-risk OB/GYN unit, according to Texas Children's. That Houston project represented an investment of more than $200 million that began in 2021, and also added 12 private NICU rooms along with a 16-bed mother-baby unit featuring NICU Couplet Care rooms, per the hospital's announcement.
