A juvenile boy suffered a serious gunshot wound Monday afternoon in a shooting near a preschool in West Valley City, sending officers racing to secure the scene and prompting a nearby high school to lock its doors. Police later tracked down a suspect miles away at a Salt Lake City TRAX station, recovering the firearm believed to have been used in the attack.
According to KSL TV, West Valley City Police responded around 12:37 p.m. to reports of a shooting near 1142 S. 2320 South, where officers found the juvenile suffering from a serious gunshot wound. The station reported that officers initiated a search for whoever fired the shots while the scene was being processed. KUTV similarly reported that the shooting took place near a preschool in West Valley City, with a photo from the scene credited to Tony Mikayelyan.
Police did not let the trail go cold. West Valley City Police Sgt. Kevin McLachlan told the station that investigators recovered the suspect firearm and arrested one person at a Salt Lake City TRAX transit station, well outside city limits. Officers confirmed shortly after the arrest that there was no ongoing threat to the public, per the same account.
Nearby High School Locks Down as Police Work the Scene
The shooting's ripple effects reached Roots Charter High School, where administrators initiated a lockdown and hold protocol around 1 p.m., monitoring building doors and restricting entry while officers processed the crime scene outside. Staff guarded exits to manage safety as the investigation unfolded nearby, the station's report noted.
Utah's Granite School District distinguishes between two levels of precaution. A “Secure protocol” locks exterior doors when police activity occurs in nearby neighborhoods, while a full “Lockdown” is reserved for direct threats on campus grounds.
A Pattern of Youth Gun Violence in West Valley City
Monday's shooting is not an isolated event in West Valley City's recent history. In February 2025, a suspected drug-related shooting near 4100 South and 2200 West injured two adults and led to a juvenile being taken into custody, triggering secure protocols across multiple Granite District schools, as reported by KUTV.
A 14-year-old boy survived a gunshot wound after an occupant in a white SUV called him over by name and opened fire in a church parking lot on Parliament Avenue, according to KSL.com. Police said the victim suffered a gunshot wound near his shoulder. Further back, in July 2020, officers responded to a late-night shooting at an Extended Stay hotel on City Center Court that left a juvenile hospitalized with gunshot wounds and resulted in four adult arrests after a crowd rioted, per Gephardt Daily.
Statewide Numbers Show Rising Youth Gun Bookings
The incident lands against a backdrop of shifting juvenile crime statistics across Utah. Research from the University of Utah found that the number of juveniles booked statewide for firearm-related offenses doubled between fiscal year 2015 and fiscal year 2024, climbing from 43 to 107 youth bookings.

Research from the University of Utah found that the number of juveniles booked statewide for firearm-related offenses doubled between fiscal year 2015 and fiscal year 2024, climbing from 43 to 107 youth bookings. The Salt Lake Area Gang Project has identified roughly 50 active street gangs operating across Salt Lake County, encompassing approximately 1,300 juvenile members, Hoodline previously reported in coverage of a Kearns gang recruiting case.
The motive behind Monday's shooting, along with the age and identity of the person arrested at the TRAX station, had not been released as of Sunday evening. It remains unclear whether the shooting stemmed from a targeted dispute or a broader gang-related conflict, and investigators have not said how the suspect reached the transit station after the gunfire near 2320 South.
