A 39-year-old Yorktown, Indiana man is behind bars after allegedly trapping a victim inside a residence for days, striking them repeatedly and sexually assaulting them before the victim finally escaped in a car. Tyson Brownlee was booked into the Delaware County Jail on Thursday, facing a string of serious felony charges tied to the alleged ordeal.

According to a probable cause affidavit cited by Fox 59, Brownlee faces rape, criminal confinement, battery and interference with the reporting of a crime. The affidavit states Brownlee prevented the victim from leaving the residence by Monday night, and that he kept the victim confined to a bedroom throughout Wednesday.

The affidavit describes how the situation first began to unravel days earlier. The victim reportedly noticed Brownlee acting unusually during a birthday party the previous Sunday, observing fluctuating coldness, unusually high energy, low energy and excessive sweating — behavior that led the victim to suspect Brownlee was under the influence of a possible illegal narcotic, per the affidavit. A confrontation followed the party, and by the next day Brownlee had accused the victim of being a witch, the affidavit states.

Repeated Assaults Documented in Court Filing

Court documents reviewed by the station indicate Brownlee struck the victim when they attempted to leave, and that he physically assaulted the victim roughly 10 to 15 times over the course of the alleged confinement. The affidavit also states Brownlee sexually assaulted the victim. Law enforcement reportedly observed significant bruising on the victim, which investigators say corroborated the reported assaults.

A Missing Phone Becomes the Victim's Opening

The alleged ordeal reached a turning point Thursday morning, when Brownlee briefly left the residence and returned shortly after, having left his phone behind at a store, the affidavit says. Brownlee and the victim then drove around Yorktown together searching for the missing device, according to the filing. Once back at the residence, the victim located Brownlee's phone inside the home and threw it out the door, the affidavit states.

When Brownlee went outside to retrieve the phone, the victim seized the moment — locking the residence's doors and windows while he was outside, according to court documents. Brownlee allegedly banged on the doors and windows in an attempt to get back inside, but the victim was able to escape the residence and drive away from the property in their own car, the affidavit says.

Charges and What Comes Next

Under Indiana law, the criminal confinement charge Brownlee faces is classified as a Level 6 felony, according to the Indiana General Assembly's criminal code covering offenses against the person. The rape charge against Brownlee is listed as a Level 3 felony, per the probable cause affidavit cited by the station's report. Online court records reviewed at the time of the station's report did not show an expected court appearance date for Brownlee.
