Chicago police said the shooting unfolded in the 9700 block of South Avenue L, according to WGN-TV. The outlet reported that the boy was inside the home when he was struck, and that he died at the scene. As of the station's report, authorities had not identified him publicly.
Motive and Circumstances Remain Unclear

The 9700 block of South Avenue L has seen gun violence before. In July 2021, a 25-year-old man was fatally shot multiple times during a shoot-out on that same block and crashed his vehicle into a parked car, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
Other Shootings in the Area
The East Side neighborhood and the broader Far South Side have seen other shootings in recent years. A drive-by shooting near East 102nd Street and South Avenue J left one woman dead and another injured, ABC7 Chicago reported. Separately, a shooting inside a Far South Side residence killed a 16-year-old boy and wounded two other males, ages 17 and 18, according to FOX 32 Chicago. Neither incident has been tied to Wednesday's shooting.
Citywide Shooting Trends
Citywide, Chicago recorded 289 homicides through the end of August, two more than the city had tallied at the same point in 2025, according to WTTW News. The outlet also reported 141 shooting incidents in August, nearly 20% fewer than the same month a year earlier, and said 1,264 people had been shot across the city through the first eight months of 2026, about 1% fewer than over the same period in 2025. Those figures are citywide totals and are not specific to the East Side shooting.
