An Indianapolis woman is facing multiple felony charges after police say she fired a handgun at two people walking their dog in Halloween costumes, then threw a punch when she approached them. Officers responded around 11:41 p.m. on Halloween night to reports of shots fired in the 4800 block of Bertha Street, where investigators say an encounter on a porch led to gunfire.
According to court documents cited by Fox 59, the two victims told police they were walking westbound on Bertha Street in their costumes when they passed a woman they believed to be Goodman sitting on her porch. Court documents allege that Goodman then pulled out a black handgun, pointed it at the pair, and fired a single shot in their direction before retreating inside her home.
Goodman emerged from the house a short time later and verbally berated the two people, according to the victims’ account relayed in the documents. The documents further allege that Goodman approached the pair and threw a punch that did not land. One of the victims then struck Goodman in the face, causing her to fall, according to the victims’ account, and that same victim called 911.
Shell Casing And Holster Found At The Scene
When officers arrived, court documents say they found a spent 9mm shell casing near Goodman’s front door and a handgun holster sitting on the porch beside the chair she had occupied. Responding officers also observed Goodman slurring her speech and noted that her eyes appeared glassy, the documents state. Court documents describe her as heavily intoxicated and incapable of answering basic questions.
A search warrant was approved before officers searched Goodman’s home, where they located a loaded Glock model 45 and a loaded 9mm handgun inside, per the same court documents. Indianapolis police arrested Goodman in connection with the shooting, which they described as targeting people wearing costumes on Halloween night.
Preliminary Felony Charges Filed
Goodman was arrested on a preliminary criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon charge, a Level 6 felony, along with a preliminary battery by means of a deadly weapon charge, a Level 5 felony. She also faces a preliminary intimidation charge listed as a Level 5 felony and two additional preliminary intimidation counts listed as Level 6 felonies, the report notes.
Under Indiana law, a person commits criminal recklessness by recklessly, knowingly, or intentionally performing an act that creates a substantial risk of bodily injury to another person, according to Indiana Code. Online court records show Goodman is scheduled to appear in Marion Superior Court 30 on Wednesday for her initial hearing.
