According to the Chicago Sun-Times, a 33-year-old man was shot in the neck at Ellis Park in Chicago’s Oakland neighborhood Wednesday evening and died at the scene. The shooting happened at 6:22 p.m. in the 3500 block of South Vincennes Avenue, and as of the latest report, no one was in custody.
According to the Chicago Sun-Times, police said the man was in the park when he was struck in the neck and was pronounced dead at the scene. The outlet reported that no one is currently in custody in connection with the shooting. No further details about the victim’s identity, a motive, or a suspect description have been released.
A Fatal Shooting Adds to a Grim Citywide Tally
The killing comes as Chicago’s homicide numbers for the year continue to be tracked closely. The city had recorded 356 homicide victims through October 31, per a weekly-updated tracker maintained by the Chicago Tribune. That tracker, which draws on police statistics, notes that its figures exclude killings that occurred in self-defense or under other circumstances not measured by Chicago police.
The same tracker reported that the Austin neighborhood had logged the most homicides of any Chicago neighborhood so far in 2026, with 28 through the end of October. The data also shows that citywide homicides had declined for four straight years, from 2022 through 2025, before this year’s count.
Other Shootings Have Occurred Near the Same Park
Ellis Park has been the site of other violent incidents in years past, though none of those reports establish any link to Wednesday’s fatal shooting. A gathering at the park turned violent during a separate overnight shooting that left five people wounded, as noted by WGN-TV. Police told the station that they discovered multiple gunshot victims in the 3600 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue and recovered four firearms at that scene.
A separate incident years earlier, reported by the Chicago Sun-Times, described six people shot near the park at about 10:45 p.m. in the 3600 block of Vincennes, with police saying the group had been standing near the park when gunfire broke out. Those cases remain distinct from Wednesday’s shooting, and investigators have not indicated any connection between them.
No one was in custody as of the latest update. Anyone with information has not yet been given a specific tip line in connection with this case, and police have not released additional details about the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.
